What Socket 775 to upgrade to

is the e8400 overclocked?
you have a good overclocking mobo.
the most popular quad is the Q6600, with a decent G0 revision capable of getting to 3.6ghz,
used ones can be bought for about £50-£70
you will see the difference in games optimised for quads like BFBC2 etc...
there are faster ones like a q9650 but these are more expensive

Ah, well in terms of CPU performance for the s775, very little has changed as the socket has been retired - so the best upgrade option for the socket is a Q9650 or Q9550 - but these are crazy expensive. If you want to do a CPU upgrade, then I would strongly suggest selling your mobo/CPU/RAM and upgrading to Intel sandy bridge or wait for AMD bulldozer (coming next month).

This chart shows how the current favourite mainstream CPU the i5 2500K (currently on sale for £150) compares to the E8400 in a range of tasks.

can't say I've noticed any probs with my Q9550 chip...will still happily smash games the way I want with no problem. Going to skip Sandy and see what next gen does, personally.

Yea, the Q9550 and Q9650 chips are great CPUs - its just that the price is crazy considering you can get an i5 2500K sandy bridge and 4GB of DDR3 for the same price as a second-hand Q9650.

I've throught about upgrading my E8400 setup for a while... But I haven't found anything that it can't run yet, so I'll just keep saving the pennies and buy something better when I eventually DO find I'm running out of steam :)

Save up till you can do a full CPU/mobo/RAM upgrade to an 1155 Sandy bridge system. There's not much point throwing money at 775 any more.

+1

Good advice.

I also have just ditched my 775 pc & have gone over to Sandy Bridge, usb 3, sata 3, are just a few of benefits of upgrading.

Why are S775 Quad CPU's so expensive still?

I was looking at upgrading my C2D E7200 to a Quad but 2nd hand they are still very expensive.

I thinks it's to do with a short supply (they don't make them any more) and a large demand (many people with s775 systems wanting to do a CPU-only upgrade and these Q9x50 CPUs are the best available). You are probably best off either finding a good deal on a Q6600 G0 stepping or sell up and buy a P67+i5 2500K. That said, AMD bulldozer is about to arrive in June - so I reckon it's worth waiting to see what that brings to the table.

As good as sandybridge is for the price there are a lot of 775 systems that still keep up well enough. For myself I think i'll be keeping my 775 setup for a while longer - just wish my mobo was crossfire .....

If you have an existing 775 system that still performs well, that's great. It's CPU or motherboard upgrades to a 775 system which I don't think make much sense any more. Much better putting the cash towards a newer platform.
