What sort of card for around the £250 mark?

Hi guys,

Looking to get an upgrade on my GTX 970 and I’m looking to spend around £250. Don’t mind going a bit higher if it’s worthwhile. It’s been a long time since I really bothered with PC gaming but I want to at least have the choice to play games at 1440p with decent settings.

Now, I realise that buying a brand new card at this price point isn’t going to get me anything particularly worthwhile so I’m anticipating going 2nd hand. Obviously I can’t get direct links to any 2nd hand cards for sale but I’m just wondering what used cards people would recommend at this sort of budget?

From a quick look I think somewhere around a 2070 Super could be viable but wondering if there are any other thoughts or considerations here.

Do you not have access to the members market? I think you're right about 2070, I saw a 2060 sell for 140 the other day.

I do. I never seem to be quick enough to get the good deals though :) But I will be scouring it more frequently.

Might be worth setting up the notifications for new threads. I'm not sure if you can set it up for keywords or not though.

Personally I don't think even a 2070 Super is worth it against just buying a brand new 6600/6650/6700 non-XT, so many cards are going to be knackered (having been mined on, just plain OLD, or buggy AF i.e. RDNA v1).

A 6650xt can be had on here for £299.99 given nvidia prices around this price point I'd have a look at the AMD card. It seems to match RTX 2080 most of the time whilst matching a 2080 Ti in AMD favoured titles.

*edit* after seeing the 6700 for £338 on here that could be a good shout but at what point do you stop - "if I spend just an extra xyz I can get xyz gpu.." if you were going 2nd hand 2080 Supers I've seen go for £300 on a famous social media marketplace and will offer better raytracing performance

^^This^^ In the new card market 6600/6650's are the best bang for buck in the OP's price bracket.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Fair point about used cards likely having been hammered with mining for most of their lives too, so perhaps I am better off just buying something new.

I have considered just throwing more money at a new card but I know if I don't just be firm with myself then I can somehow end up convincing myself that £500+ for a 3070 makes sense :D (it doesn't for what's likely to be occasional use in my case).

Will do some research on 6650 XT and 6700 cards. I could potentially be persuaded to do £339 on the 6700 :)

Does anyone reckon the imminent announcement of the RTX 4070 Ti is likely to result in any price drops for the 3000 series cards?

I think only further up the range. The 4070Ti will probably be at least £700. My guess would be more like £800. I don't think it will have any effect on cards under £500. Nvidia have been very clear about keeping 3000 series prices as high as possible for as long as possible by pricing 4000 cards even higher. That's what they've done so far and I don't think that will change.

But hey, I could be wrong.

Its not much better, tho it does have 10GB VRam vs 8GB on the 6650XT.

Means going over budget but if it were me I’d spend the extra £70 to get a new nvidia RTX 3060 for £320
The £320 RTX3060 you referring to is the probably the 8GB version, which is around 15-17% slower than the 12GB version...

Gotta love Nvidia's deceptive marketing of calling a card with less core, narrow memory bus and less memory with the same model number...

Not really. At most it would only cause a little bit of change for price of cards around the £800 segment, it will do nothing to the pricing for the sub-£500 market.

Also Nvidia yesterday at CES referred to the 2 years old 3000 series cards as "mainstream graphic cards", so looks like they have no plan of releasing any new 4000 series card for the sub £500 until they deplete all of their 3000 series inventory.

Yeah, when I heard them say that my heart sank as it means no chance I’ of getting 4000 series cards at mainstream prices anytime soon :(

Looking like it could be nearer 2024 before we get a 4060!
