What sort of games can I expect to 'comfortably' run on this spec?

diablo 2, quake 3 (about medium settings), UT (the first one), trackmania, worms.

There a plenty of games that will run just don't expect anything new to run smoothly. Medium to low speced laptops make great platforms for re-visiting a lot of your older game collections.
Hell I've even got space invaders on my laptop.

If you don't have an older game collection, then at the games that will run will most likely be out on budget.

Yeh i played all of the Warcraft 3 series on an MX400 card i think - was awesome and ran just dandy - it was only when i installed the game on a newer machine that i realised the difference.

OH! and play Mech Warrior 4 too - that will run and its great.

Call of Duty 2 will run great on that spec, and can be picked up dirt cheap these days.

Also, Trackmania should run fine too, and you can get it for a fiver. Download the demo of Trackmania Forever to see how that runs, and then see if you want to buy the full version (see the Trackmania thread about how to get the latest version for a fiver).

Thanks for all the suggestions :) should help me get a few games together when this thing gets delivered.

Out of all the games mentioned, I've never played:

TF2
Dialbo 2
Trackmania
Warcraft 3
Mech Warrior 4
COD 2

Reckon Sim City 4 will run ok on it?

That looks a decent laptop to me, the onboard graphics are very much holding it back though.

The inspiron didn't have an option of another card. :(

I have to admit, if there was I'd of paid the extra. Oh well, I don't trust the Nvidia 8400's / 8600's at the moment anyway, the laptop will be mainly entertainment purposes and studying, and a bit of light gaming when I'm really bored at uni and I'm not with mates.

I've got a friend who has a sony laptop which the GPU has just died in, and it's just outside of warranty and he's stuffed.

i didnt think any 3d game would play with on board gfx?

My spare lappy has onbaord GMA950, ancient and slow as all hell.
It's still enough to play Q3 engine games tho, and games like Warcraft III, soldat, snes games etc..

Onboard graphics are fine as long as you don't mind older games and lower settings :)

i would try trackmania off steam - [full game for free]
older sports games?
nhl and fifa 2000 & 2001 run ok on my laptop

i also had a blast through hitman and mdk recently on holiday

good old days type games!!! lol

my brothers laptop

celly cpu - 512ram etc runs halo at basic - perhaps you could run that at medium ish settings
