It's not a trivial point because it was the only point you actually made, which was completely wrong because it wasn't even true in the first place.

As for your other points you haven't even bothered to be specific. Basically saying "the government sucks lol they rule us, what you say about that?"

I think you're just clutching at straws to warrant your thread, when everyone knows that you simply made a mistake and jumped the gun and made a thread on something you hadn't researched properly. You hadn't actually even visited the petition itself by the sound of it. :\

Thread needs to be closed.

Well your entitled to your opinion, yet my points still stand, the issue of tony personally closing one petition is minor when so many issues are rolled up into one, if you now can't after my asking, still not discuss the larger issues then anything else is beside the point im afraid.

Do you agree that these very real plans are good or bad, and what do you think about them?

I say admit that you made a bit of a knee-jerk thread without properly digesting the information before you do anything else :)

Hows it knee-jerk when these things have been going on for so long?

I agree its a minor point about tony that just happens to be placed at the start of my first post, but remember im going by what the news article says, so no real error on my part is present, tony himself closing the petition was more a general comment than anything seriously believed.

As for attempting to give a reason as to why ID cards are being put in place, I can't word it better than how Mr Blair put it

We live in a world in which people, money and information are more mobile than ever before. Terrorists and international criminal gangs increasingly exploit this to move undetected across borders and to disappear within countries. Terrorists routinely use multiple identities — up to 50 at a time... ID cards which contain biometric recognition details and which are linked to a National Identity Register will make this much more difficult.
I don't really believe that even Tony Bliar still believes that ID Cards will make much difference in controlling terrorism - it was always more to do with controlling benefit fraud.

However, using ID Cards to solve old crimes on the basis of what will effectively be a national fingerprint database makes absolute sense - bring it on ;)

Sadly, the chances of any Government inspired ID Card database actually working are next to zero :(

Repetitiveness didn't get through to you, so next I'll try large bold text.

Tony Blair did not personally close the petition. It ended automatically when it reached its pre-set deadline.

Why are you still repeating something i myself said after the first few posters kept pointing this out? :p

It ended automatically when it reached it's pre-set deadline.

Now this is disputed, the news article states "Prime Minister Tony Blair has responded personally via email to 28,000 online petitioners opposing the UK's planned identity card scheme, and has closed the online petition."

I imagine the petition site would say the same thing whether something is closed early or ends naturally, i've yet to see proof either way though and am going by the news article. :)

Hang on, you said " I know he didn't personally close it".

Make your mind up.

Check the link in my original post. :)

It's not a news article, it's just an anonymous reader writing in.

ok so that's the minor issue (the one that didnt happen)
so what are you complaining about, the id cards themselves?
the petition WAS NOT CLOSED BY ANYONE, TONY HIMSELF, TONYS CRONEY, TONY'S BEST MATE BOB, yet that's all you've said you're complaining about
if you're complaining about the actual id cards then make yourself clearer i.e. dont say you're complaining about something else

id cards are nothing to worry about had one for 10 years here in Belgium and find them a great benefit. I haven't seen any problems with having one in my wallet either.

Belgians can even use theirs to travel through Europe. Negating the need for the costly passport unless they travel outside the EU.

I wonder why the outcry? Have you thought everything through?
