What sort of insect is this?

It looks like a large ant but it's back legs are huge, so I was thinking perhaps a wingless wasp?

This pic was taken in California if that helps.
 
It's next to a US quarter, they can easily pass as a UK 10p coin, so that's pretty damn big!

Can they hell pass as 10p coins, you put one of them and a 10p coin in front of me and say right, which is the odd one out, im clearly not going to say neither, both are 10p coins :p
 
Out of interest what did you search?

I tried...

Big ant, big legged ant, fat ass ant, lardy ant, wingless wasp, scary ant, tubby insect and a few others and got nothing.

That's because it looks nothing like an ant :p

I searched "grasshopper like insects", second link, then googled " Jerusalem Cricket" and there it was :)
 
Big bunch of wusses on this forum lol, it's an insect, man up. I remember I made one of my mates cry at work, I chased him round the warehouse with a spider I found in a banana box, you've never seen a bloke move so fast in your life :D
