Hi guys,

We have a very small hedgerow at the front of our house. We have a line of hedge up against the house with approx 3 foot of soil whichg we've hust had cleared, stretching the width of the house.

We want to cover it with broken slate and then put some nice pots over that in places.

Questions:

Can we treat the soil with something to prevent the growth of weeds, without damaging the hedges?

What sort of membrane should be put over the soil before we lay the broken slates?

Any help would be really great!

Thanks,

Mal

Go into b&q they sell 2 types. A weed membrane which you can cut holes into, to let certain plants grow through, or probably what you want is a builders membrane. Black thick plastic that doesnt allow stuff through.

Builders stuff aint cheap though, comes in big roles which is about 25quid a go.
Garden centre stuff is cheaper i think.
Surely it easier to ask the people in a DIY store?

Just use some cheapo weed proof membrame. A roll will go quite a long way so you may be able to do a couple of layers. The slate itself will go a long way to prevent weed growth as well.

Don't use a builders membrane, it doesnt allow water to drain through at all, it's a damp proof membrane.

Just use the normal weed-proof membrane, lay it out and drop yer slate on it.

We've got big areas in our garden and it's very effective indeed - not one weed. :D

We've found that weed proof membrane isnt 100% effective, but by spraying with weedkiller any weeds that do come through you can get a good long-term effect, as it stops any new weeds setting root.
