I was considering going Diesel with my next car but we would only probably put 10k on a year. Why is it better to go Petrol? I don't understand. In my mind, Diesel is more economical (depending on car) full stop only costing a little bit more per litre. Someone tell me why my rash basic maths is wrong here:
Petrol car that does 35mpg combined @ 10k miles a year
Diesel car that does 45mpg combined @ 10k miles a year
Why would the Diesel not be worth it? What am I missing?
Ok, first off, smaller diesels are annoying, clattery, noisy and slow. So, you have to put up with this. You need to ask if its worth putting up with this.
Lets turn your figures into actual cash.
Petrol: £1438 a year in petrol @ 101.9p a litre
Diesel: £1115 a year in diesel @ 105.9p a litre
So, as we can see, diesel would infact only save you £26 a month on fuel. Is the clattery diesel naffnass worth putting up with for £26 a month? Perhaps... but....
Diesels cost more to buy than petrol cars used. The difference can be quite big - often a £1-2k more for a diesel than its identical petrol equivilent. Diesels out of warranty can give bigger repair bills than petrol cars - those high pressure injectors are not cheap at £1kish to replace the lot but more common is turbo failiure, again, not much change from a grand.
Still think its worth it to save £26 a month?
