What sort of Mileage is it worthwhile getting a Diesel?

Why not take this opportunity to swap it for something fun/good for about 4 grand, and give yourself some equity and get rid of that finance package you keep moaning about?

I'm open to options, i'm looking from 05 Upto 07, so.. i'm looking across the board, as long its black i'm fine with that :)

Think the Dealer will stock one same age as mine for similar price?

What I was going to say.

For pootling around 8000miles a year you really don't need to spend £8k on a car, especially at your age. (Sorry I'm not trying to sound condescending).

I know... thats why i'm considering everything.

I have 2 options, reduce the Loan, but sacrafice for something older.. but I dont honestly think i'll be as happy with my purchase.

Or get something a little more expensive and newer.

Edit: Its closer to 13/14k.. 8k is just work Mileage...

Why not? It's just a Ford Focus - reasonably competent automotive middle of the road-ness.

Older doesnt meant worse. What would you rather own, an 07 Focus or an 03 Audi S3? Not suggesting it as you'll never insure it but you take my point?

I was considering going Diesel with my next car but we would only probably put 10k on a year. Why is it better to go Petrol? I don't understand. In my mind, Diesel is more economical (depending on car) full stop only costing a little bit more per litre. Someone tell me why my rash basic maths is wrong here:

Petrol car that does 35mpg combined @ 10k miles a year
Diesel car that does 45mpg combined @ 10k miles a year

Why would the Diesel not be worth it? What am I missing?

Ok, first off, smaller diesels are annoying, clattery, noisy and slow. So, you have to put up with this. You need to ask if its worth putting up with this.

Lets turn your figures into actual cash.

Petrol: £1438 a year in petrol @ 101.9p a litre
Diesel: £1115 a year in diesel @ 105.9p a litre

So, as we can see, diesel would infact only save you £26 a month on fuel. Is the clattery diesel naffnass worth putting up with for £26 a month? Perhaps... but....

Diesels cost more to buy than petrol cars used. The difference can be quite big - often a £1-2k more for a diesel than its identical petrol equivilent. Diesels out of warranty can give bigger repair bills than petrol cars - those high pressure injectors are not cheap at £1kish to replace the lot but more common is turbo failiure, again, not much change from a grand.

Still think its worth it to save £26 a month?

You are missing the fact that:

- A diesel car costs more to buy, often considerably, which if financing as west is, will cost in finance payments.

- Diesel is getting more and more expensive offsetting the economics, and the gap is only due to increase further as diesel conumption increases.

- A diesel version will usually have shorter service intervals, thus costing more to service.

- A diesel version is much more complicated, take the diesel equivalent to mine as an example, you replace the absolutely bombproof petrol V8 which is good for hundreds of thousands of miles with a finely tuned diesel with high pressure injectors and turbochargers which fail all the time.

- Diesels generally do not perform as well, do not sound as good, and are generally not as nice to drive.

Stop chatting to dealers. Dealers have one agenda and only agenda only. They wish to make money.

You are a walking cash machine to dealers - they can have you beleive anything they tell you.

Leave them alone.

It is also true to say that girls prefer to have sex with guys who drive petrol cars, not diesel cars.

Hahaha  :D

Petrol is just so much more fun than diesel anyway, may as well go for it. :)
