What soundbar do I buy?

I went for the Sony HT-XT1 sound base wbung hen it was on offer from John Lewis when I bought my W8. TBH it's still in the box but after reading this thread I might get it out and test it. Only bought it as I thought I'd it in the bedroom (living room already has proper AVR setup) but never go round to it.

cannot believe this thread has went on for so long yet nobody has mentioned yamaha.

yamaha are the number 1 manufacturer of decent soundbars, yes other manufacturers make decent ones but yamaha are at the top of the game.

much like when someone mentions headphones - sennheiser, akg, beyerdynamic, etc are the makes you want to look at as they specialise in this sort of thing.

sony are a jack of all trades master of consoles and nothing else. i would only use a sony soundbar if i got it free with my tv.

also i don't get why some people must have matching gear, i use a yamaha soundbar with a panasonic plasma, with a sony ps4 and a Virgin Tivo box.

Take a look at the yamaha range and buy whatever suits your budget, yamaha soundbars start at £100 but go all the way into the thousands. their audiophile quality soundbars start at £500+, you get what you pay for in the end.

PsychoSonny, I've been lookin at Yamaha soundbars and features and quality looks excellent, however the problem I have with them is they tend to be too high for my TV. The YAS type sound bars are 10cm+ tall where as the distance from the bottom of the TV stand to the bottom of the screen is 9cm. Therefore the bottom of the screen will be blocked.

However if you have some examples of good models that might be suitable I would love to have a look. Cheers

I did look at the Yamaha series, the 130 in particular but as Waltagon said, the height of it put me off, as well as the appearance of it in general.

Does your TV not have a slim 1cm bezel at the bottom?

The Yamaha soundbar I have covers the bezel of my tv but none of the actual screen, it fits just perfectly any higher then a fraction would be blocked.

Yamaha soundbars also have a IR receiver and transmitter built in so it can pick up the tv remote and bounce it back to the TV so don't worry if your IR port gets blocked so long as none of the actual screen does.

Also yamaha do make sound bases which is a similar concept apart from the TV gets placed on top of the speaker instead of putting the speaker in front of the tv with a soundbar (YAMAHA SRT1000 is around £300).

They are expensive though. Why not measure a yamaha soundbar at your nearest retailer (richer sounds) and then measure the tv up to where the screen starts and not the bezel.

The YAS 103 is 91mm if you remove the legs, with legs it is 109mm. I have the older version of this one.

90mm is to the bottom of the actual screen and not the bezel so it would block the screen with the legs on. I would be worried about vibration if you take the legs off. Have you taken them off your model?

Nope I need the legs so it clears the bottom of my tv stand. I have a large 50" screen so they may be suited better to larger tv's.

Have you considered the base? Otherwise you can get a sony soundbar with all the gubbins for £70 (hotukdeals) but I doubt it matches up SQ wise to a yamaha but at that price it's probably very good.

Another vote for the Sony. I looked at a few sound bars but didn't really want a separate sub. Having it in one unit and raises the TV up a bit which was handy too. Looks great as you say and sound is v.good.

Seriously tempted because of the HDMI inputs but i'm tempted by cheaper Cambridge Audio TV2 and Denon DHT-T110
