What speakers?

True, but you suggested the Wiim Amp with Wharfedale Diamonds.

Genuine question here as I have no exeperience with them.... are they designed to be used nearfield?

Regular speakers can be used nearfield. Not ideal, but they will work.

Not sure how much difference between them is though. Just giving an example, as wiim amp/speakers give far more flexbility than active speakers, and he can look around for passive options.

Plus if he wants a sub, it will integrate into it, with nearfield you have to hope they have added a high pass function- and still missing EQ/PEQ features. And it comes with a great streamer.

I wouldn't call myself an audio expert, but what I can see is that even the cheaper Edifier's on OCUK are getting some good reviews, so I'm sure you wouldn't be disappointed with the most expensive ones they have. Some of the cheaper ones also have Bluetooth though, which might make them useful for more devices:

I use these, but when I tested them after first purchasing they were comfortably worse than my old Wharfedale Diamond 9 pair that I paid <£40 for second hand.

Still happy, because I really needed something wireless and not to be using desk space on an amplifier, but the quality isn't really close to an amp and speakers in my experience. To my mind, if you don't want to spend big money it's a very reasonable compromise.

Wow really I had 9.0 nice little speakers . For the price and size they're amazing. Lacking in bass a sub is needed.
