What speed DDR2 for a Presler

Friend of mine recently bought a 3.46ghz extreme edition presler and the P4 equivalent of the Asus A8N32sli. The mobo specs says it supports 4300 and 5300 DDR2, but there is 5400, 6400 and even 8000 ddr2 out now. I know nothing about DDR2 or P4 mobos, but if he bought the 8000 stuff and assuming his bios supported it, would he not be able to run it at 1000mhz, basically the same as what his Preslers front bus will run at. Or would he better off getiing a decent 1gig 6400 kit, like the Corsair UL stuff sold on OcUK which runs at much tighter timings then normal ddr 2. But if he did that, would that not mean the front bus of this presler would have to run at a lower speed (667 - same as memroy), unless he wanted to try and overclock the memory to hit 1000mhz. Or are there dividers on P4 mobos as well, like on A64. Confused.

Minimum is DDR2-533 which will allow that CPU to run @ its native 1066FSB. He could even overclock that another 10-15% raising the FSB speed & lowering the CPU divider.

Another method is to buy a higher rated & more expensive DDR2 (667 or 800)ram and run it @ less than 1:1 leaving the CPU divider alone to give a big overclock.

Problem is that his CPU is already very hot so it would be best if he started with the stock DDR2-533 Ram and see how he gets on with temps & a mild overclock before trying to reach higher speeds.

Thats already a pretty fast CPU TBH & an exotic cooling solution would be required for extreme overclocks with 1:1 DDR2-800 Ram (1600FSB!!). The mobo would be fine temps wise with a 1Ghz plus FSB but the CPU would get toasty!!

Thanks for the info. Cheers.

Btw, what is the best air cooling solution for this cpu ?
Depends on the case/airflow really. I have a Thermalright XP90C (pure copper) + 92mm silent fan and since changing mobos to a i955x it is only enough to keep my 670J cool. Got a Zalman 9500 coming later today as my case layout needs something like that to blow the hot air out the exhaust slots immediately.

As the 955XE runs almost as hot as the 670J would say go for either:

ThermalRight SI-120 (Socket 754/939/478) Heatsink (HS-023-TR)
Price: £26.95 (£31.67 Including VAT at 17.5%) Plus you also need to buy an LGA775 fixing kit (OCUK no longer stock it) & 120mm fan seperately.

Gigabyte G-Power Pro (Socket A/754/939/478/775) Cooler (GH-PDU21-MF) (HS-004-GI) Price: £24.95 (£29.32 Including VAT at 17.5%)
Good cooler but supposed to be very noisy @ high speed. Seen 72db quoted for it!

Zalman CNPS9500-LED Aero Flower (Socket 939/754/478/775) CPU Cooler (HS-015-ZA) Price: £31.95 (£37.54 Including VAT at 17.5%)
This is the one I get today. Did a lot of research on it beforehand. Some people say it is very noisy whilst others say silent. Must depend on your case configuration & ear distance to it.

Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket 775) (HS-017-AR)
Price: £12.95 (£15.22 Including VAT at 17.5%)
Bit confused about this one as some people say it is a very bad performer if you have a hot cpu (like the 955xe/670j) whilst others say no problem @ all. I'm put off by the cheap price and small fan TBH.

Few more here but the ones I listed are the best P4 air coolers OCUK do @ present. http://www.silentpcreview.com/article30-page1.html

A lot of it boils down to how much noise bothers you & how much money you wanna spend as going quiet can cost £300++. Consider that a 955XE needs a very good PSU (as do all PCs really). Lot of people buy cheapo ones which can have issues not supplying enough power. Decent one will be approx £100-120.

Thanks for the detailed reply. Lots to chew on there. I actually had a 9500 on my FX57 and found it pretty decent. At 3.1ghz my cpu idles around 34-36 and never went over 50 under load. Not sure if it will be good enough for the Presler though. I suppose it depends on the airflow of the case as you say. I think he has an Antec P150. Maybe a bit restrictive ?
