I am building a basic PC for my sister comprising a conroe 6300 but i cant work out which RAM I should get. The PC isnt going to be clocked so just some basic value RAM is really needed. Do i need 533 or faster RAM?

Thanks

I would slot in some of this - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-066-CS

1GB is entry level nowadays!

Yep that is exactly what I was looking at, all this conroe stuff is confusing me. Why couldnt they stay with ddr. :p

Thats good as it will save her another £10. We went to a small shop and got them to spec her a system round a few bits of hardware and it seemed to come out cheaper than I could build from here but I have been looking into the pieces they will use and I decided I may be able to build one cheaper.

So if anyone is interested spec me a complete system with a 6300, 1GB RAM and a 250GB HDD for less than £600. :D

Just gonna be for office sort of use? eg. emails, msn, web browsing, movies etc?

It does work out cheaper building your own system, more of a quality build too ;)

Could change the graphics card to meet closer to £600 if you wanted, depends on her requirements etc.

Onboard graphics should be fine, its pretty much just for word, the net and watching films/TV. The only reason I think a 6300 should be picked is because of the price/performance ratio, stupidly cheap in comparison to the x2's and single cores.

Yeah good value for money and the performance will be useful in multi-tasking! I'm not sure if that board has onboard graphics you know... I'll check!

My opinion is that boards with onboard graphics are usually a poor value. A DS3 or S3 with a cheap-o, perhaps second hand, PCI-e graphics card is a better value. It renders the motherboard more useful as it allows for overclocking in the future. It will hold its value better as such.

It doesn't have onboard VGA :( neither do a lot of boards only one I could find was the DS3/S3. Like billy said, might be better sticking in a £40 256MB X1300?

I chose the monitor because it has a DVI input so it meets the full Windows Vista Premium specification with the DVI output on the motherboard. I could have specified OEM quality keyboard/mouse etc. but I couldn't bring myself to do it...

FSP is a "brand" power supply as far as I'm concerned. Their assemblies are top notch.

I agree - but for some reason I always buy the same thing badged as Akasa myself!

WJA96 That looks pretty much perfect, and pretty much on budget too. Any reason you chose the OCUK ram as opposed to the corsair, or was it just monetary? As well the samsung, is that a space issue with the sata or is it an excellent drive in comparison to others?

I have a spare keyboard here so just a bog standard basic optical mouse will do saving £20 and she only wants a 17 inch monitor (to the point she asked if they would change a 19 "WS to a 17 in a purple shirt package :p ) which will save another £5-£10. :)

The OcUK RAM is cheaper and it's also rated at PC6400 so if you need to swap it into something faster next year, it will still be current. Or if you need to overclock then it will be useful there too.

Samsung are known to be quiet, plus it's a 16Mb cache drive so I picked that. I think there is a cheaper Maxtor, but I've just had a bad time with a Maxtor drive that is theoretically under warranty but they will only RMA it through the place I bought it from as it's an OEM drive

None of the other suppliers except Seagate (who now own Maxtor) do that so guess which manufacturers I'm now avoiding like the plague? Seagate and Maxtor!

I don't know if you noticed but there is a 15" widescreen for £88 that I have seen running and the picture was gorgeous. Small, but gorgeous.

I think 19" is the bare realistic minimum to run 1280x1024, but my eyes are old and tired ;)

I actually meant the samsung DVDRW drive you specced. ;)

I did notice the 15" widescreen but thought especially as it is widescreen it will be too small, my sister specifically didnt want a WS so I obey (as she is paying for it) :p

Oh I see - well, why would you buy a PATA drive if you can have a SATA one for about the same cost? Helps keep cables tidy too :)
