What SSD for my setup...

Ok....ive been bouncing tweaks to my new build about the forum....

After asking about speeding things up from another angle here...

Its came to the conclusion that I should really have a SSD in there as well, really just need somthing to put the programmes onto and a few other things, of course keeping cost to a min would be nice but realistically 80GB is about right I think..

So..the question is, what one to go for?..

this is my current build just finished last week...tho everything is installed and not looking forward to have to do that all again!...but...if its worth it...

Physically..how small are they?

After using my OCZ Vertex 2E 60GB for a while I'd highly recommend it.

Base on your planned usage, you need at least a Vertex 2 120 GB, A Crucial C300 128GB or an Intel X25M 160GB. It can be "Velcro" mounted in any part inside the HTPC case which means you can keep your regular HDD.

80GB Intel is a good choice. The more SSD space you have, the less hassle you have moving games around when you get a new one.
When I had a single 80GB it was enough for OS, Apps and around 5 big game installs. I used to just cut and paste the game directories to a mechanical drive instead of uninstalling when I needed space - copying the directories back is quicker than a reinstall.

SNapped back and went with teh Intel 80GB...

Question now is whats the trick to setting them up?...or is it just like a regular HDD install?

Its just like a regular HDD install, but if you are moving windows over to the SSD from an old drive, you have to unplug all your other drives while installing windows to the SSD, because windows has a nasty habit of installing the boot sector onto your previous drives instead of onto the SSD.

I prefer the Crucial c300 64gb.

I have the C300 64gb with the Asus US36 card plugged into my spare x16 slot on my Asus p5Q-Deluxe mother board.
I get the full speed of over 355mb/s read and max out at 387mb/s on atto.

The way I look at it going RAID is not worth it because TRIM does not work with Marvel drivers only Intel and MS once.
Also I do not do lots of sequential reads or writes. I have only one SSD and so only want fast reads. The speed increase from one C300 to two is not going to be seen in the real use of my PC unless I have other SSD that I am copying data from and to.

So I think its only worth the RAID if you want to brag a about the speeds and if you have other SSD which you copy large data from and to. NOTE the more you write to your SSD the quicker it will eventually die and therefore using the SSD as a OS drive means it will last longer.

I'm afraid it's not compatible with your motherboard, and, it's of no use to you cause you went for intel SSD which is a SATA 2 3Gbp/s generation.
