I was previously using Aida64 but with the removal of windows gadgets it's not really what I'm looking for any more, Just want a simple layout on the desktop to show cpu, gpu core, gpu vrm, usage %'s and maybe fan RPM. A lot of the other software available don't seem to offer a lot of customisation, I don't need a whole page of voltage reading and each cores usage, Just something quick and easy to glance at on the desktop.

any one know of any good alternatives?

I always use afterburner for OC and fan profiles but monitoring wise it's not really what I'm after, rainmeter skins seems like something I'll look into though. cam also might be worth a look

I use MSI AB too, which works nicely with my G510 keyboard. It's nice not having anything on-screen while gaming.

I'm looking to replace my old little LCD display runnning LCD Studio and am thinking of just plugging in a little 7" USB monitor to display system information.

I assume RainMeter would allow me to display (straight from booting up) information on that second 7" screen? Such as:-
- core temps?
- max temps?
- cpu usage?
- frames per second (when plahing games)?
etc?

You need to link Rainmeter to a program that can read temps, by itself it can't do this. The link I posted above is a plugin that links it with MSI AfterBurner.

..and Rainmeter could be used to create a "display" that would appear on my second 7" (800x480) monitor basically using it's area to display graphs/values etc?

Ideally I'd just want to boot, and it would be there?!

I assume then, if I moved a program into that second 7" monitor it would appear over the top of (replace) the Rainmeter graphics?

Yup. The screenshot I posted above is actually on my second screen, so I have somewhere very easy to look while I have a game loaded on the main screen. Apps you open will go on top of Rainmeter as well, so it doesn't really get in the way.

I don't bother monitoring temps 24/7

Indeed. I like to monitor stuff on a new build just to make sure everything is running right and it's nice to see GPU/CPU usage in relation to each other when testing new games. But once that is done, forget it.
