Could anyone tell me which one of these drives is the fastest and which one makes the least noise, also is there much difference between the old 8MB cache ones and the new 16MB cache ones?
Well, you have the size of it, and the new 16mb cache ones are supposedly quieter. Unless you have owned all 3 types, its hard to compare sounds. I have a 150Gb raptor, and it clicks and clanks when seeking. Apart from that you never hear it.
The 36Gb ones are pretty poor in comparision to modern 7200rpm disks because their data density is quite low. The 8Mb cache 74Gb ones are a bit better but not much.
The 150s and newer 16Mb cache 74Gb ones (forget the exact model code) are much better, they use a 74Gb platter so the data density and hence speed are much better than the older ones.
After checking on the internet further I have heard that that the new 36GB ones are the worst and some people say the new 74GB ones are the best and others say that the 150GB ones are best. I will get either the new 74GB one or the new 150GB one but does anyone have any details on how they compare, except of course in storage capacity.
There is very little difference between the 16Mb cache 74Gb drives and the 150s. They both use a ~74Gb platter, the 74Gb drive has one, the 150 has 2. As a result there's very little difference in speed between the two.
Thanks for the advice. There is a lot of difference of opinion it seems on this issue but the balance seems to be towards the 74GB so I think i'll get that one and then upgrade to another later maybe. Or should I get the one with NCQ as the 74GB one doesn't have that feature?
