Hi all

i've posted a couple of questions here including 1 earlier.

the thing is, i've been advised i have only a marvell controller for sata3 but i believe i have an intel ich10r and a marvell.

can someone confirm this is the case and i can run a ssd at the full stated speeds(the intel sata sockets are blue, marvell grey).

my mobo link is here

http://uk.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1366/P6X58DE/#specifications

thanks for taking the time to look

All your Intel SATA ports are SATA 2 (3Gbps).

There are no native Intel SATA 3 ports on the X58 chipset.

You've only got to look at the page you linked:

Intel® ICH10R controller:
6 x SATA 3Gb/s port(s), blue
Support Raid 0, 1, 5, 10

Marvell® PCIe 9128 controller:
2 x SATA 6Gb/s port(s), gray

The Intel SATA 2 ports will operate at up to ~280MB/s.

The Marvell SATA 3 ports are crap and probably won't offer much, if anything, more.

doh, didn't see they read differently

The above is SATA-2

This is SATA-3

Is that what you mean?

yeah sort of, see above.

if i install on a sata2 port, can i change it to a marvell port to see if it is any faster?

would there be problems?

You can switch over as long as both controllers are enabled in the BIOS and you've installed the appropriate drivers.

If I remember correctly several people on the forum have tried the Marvell SATA 3 ports and gone back to using the Intel SATA 2 ports.

I'm not even sure if the Marvell controller supports AHCI which is the best mode to use with an SSD.

my mobo manual says if i use the marvel ports i should enable ahci so i guess it does support it.

thanks to both for taking the time to help.
