What the hell happened to MTV?

I used to have MTV on in the background whilst at the gym about 10 years ago, and it was full of music and presenters. It was basically a TV version of Radio 1 which was cool.

I had MTV on in the background yesterday whilst doing some work at home, and they had about 3 hours of back-to-back 'Date my Mom'/...

WTF?

It I wanted to watch some crappy reality show, I would flick to one of the dozen reality TV stations that cable is full of. Sure, put the old reality show on here and there for variety, but not for 3 hours constant!

Same with Sky 1 TBH, 3 hours of back-to-back Simpsons. Jeez, how about some originality & variety guys????

It's all utter crap imho.

I turn over from time to time and it's pretty much always the same music, another crappy release from 50 Cent talking about sex, or how he got shot a few times and is still alive.
But even then, all of the channels (bar MTV2 I should say) are the same. Reality TV shows, those crappy "The Fabulous Life Of..." programs they keep repeating day after day.

I'd rather listen to some internet radio through Winamp, at least you get lots of varied music without the advertisements for the 'latest' ringtones etc.

:D

I've been having this debate for the last six months with my kids.
MTV is on 24/7 in my house and I've yet to hear any music on it.
Of course, all I get is being called thicko, **** and other insults because all the other MTV channels are for music - not in my day it wasn't.
I keep saying why can't they have MTV for music and then have a channel called MTV Crap for all the shows but all I get is a

MTV is crap, everytime you flick onto it its an advert, and an annoying advert at that.

I hate it when they have "download weekend" or "ozzfest wednesday", and don't show any live videos argh

I just go on youtube all the time now instead

MTV's gone well pants. I haven't seen MTV in a few months but do they still show South Park, Celebrity Deathmatch, cribs, Jackass and the other Jackass type show with the welsh lads.

That was MTV at it's best (imo). None of this Date My Mom crap.

The best thing MTV ever showed int he UK was The Maxx.

And as a silence decends on the forum, I find myself alone again....

*n

I miss Martha Quinn, and Jonathon Elias' guitar riff for the MTV theme (complete with astronaut on the moon with an MTV flag).

Those were the days, also, when videos told a story. like Motley Crue's "Too Young to Fall in Love" or Twisted Sister's "We're Not Gonna Take It". There was even the MJ "Thriller" video that was a mini-movie in itself.

Good stuff. Good times.

This just shows the age gap.
When I was 'younger' MTV showed music.

What's with all this "mtv sucks because it went black" comment? "black men singing/rapping about drugs, woman and bitches" statement?

I dont wanna be drawn into this......Gonna go now.

So true....

It's not that MTV never used to play black music and gave blck artists airtime. It's just that it didn't try and be "street" all the time. MTV was just cool in it's own way, but now it's trying to be all urban all the time. It's totally lost it's identity.

I remember watching it in the early 90's and it was incredible when you would see stuff like:

Cypus Hill
Nirvana
Apex Twin
Metalica

And my 2p because otherwise i wouldnt have posted anything (:p).. i'm 21 and never really watched MTV. I listen to music, i dont watch it. I really couldnt care less about music videos in general. Never really was a fan of any of the MTV shows that i'm aware of either. I do understand the importance of the channel though. Meh.
