What the hell have I bought?

what are the interior differences made to the car after 2004? as I drove a 2002 R a few years back and the leather felt dry ( probably not conditioned ) and the doors had that crap sound when closing them. Real flimsy

From 2004 onward they changed the dials and the styling changed a little.
The big changes happened in 2002.
Odd, mine feel very solid to close.

That didn't last long!
Today it blew it's valley hose. This hose is infamous as it causes all the coolant to leave the car, costs £1.90p for the part and takes 6 to 10 hours to replace due to having to pull the supercharger to get at it.
Too big a job for me so my local indie is going to do it on Wednesday. £400 ish.
They can have a rummage around under there and swap out anything else that looks worn/corroded/leaky etc while they have it out.

Stuff I've done to her recently:
Fixed park radar with a new speaker
Replaced main-beam lamps with Ring +100 items
Replaced side-lights with Cree 5W LEDs
Replaced front speakers with Focal 165A1 components
Wired in a speaker to line level converter from the subwoofer output
Machine polished her
Replaced driver's side front wheel with one that isn't egg-shaped

That's an annoying amount of money for such an inexpensive part.

It's infamous on these engines. It's not a case of if it needs replacing, it's a case of "when" it needs replacing. Usually at around 60 - 80k. It's recommended that if ever one has the SC off for whatever reason, then it should be replaced no matter what.
It's the same on all of these engines. XJR, Rangie V8SC, XKR etc etc.

TBH, the cost doesn't annoy me. This is a 400bhp car that cost £50k when it was new. You don't run these on the same maintenance budget as a Fiesta. Eyes open and all that jazz.

Just make sure you replace every hose under there and if it has one replace the PVC valve too whilst your down there, its cheap but an absolute nightmare.

When I got my S-Type I did all this, removed all the inlet manifolds, replaced the coolant, PCV hoses, plugs and gave everything a good cleaning. Only thing I did not change is the coil packs and they are now degrading, as per expectation for a car with 130,000 on the clock. In my ownership I've had to change due to impending failure or failure the offside front wheel bearing which is the whole hub assembly, was about £120 and the drivers side electric window assembly, was like £25 from Ebay. Apart from that I service it, new filters and oil etc. and well for a car which cost me £700, if you add all the parts I knew it needed and its had during ownership its cost me about £1200-£1300 including maintenance cost.

Tax is about £220 a year, insurance is about £260 a year and I average 25-27mpg and it can achieve 38mpg on a run and even though its a 2000 car its a lovely place to sit and very comfortable.

Hopefully it will get me through another winter and require no maintenance work to do so.

Mine is cloth so no issues there and no horrible cold leather in the winter. :D

The flimsy door you experienced sounds to me like the car you drove had previously maybe had its doorcards removed and the retainers were probably snapped and not replaced in the progress, cost about 60p from Jag. But the doors should not sound flimsy if the door cards are firmly and securely attached. :)

I paid £700 so I am not too fussed and with all work and maintenance its needed in my ownership its cost me circa £1200 in total. :)

I was looking at these the other day, fantastic amount of car for the cost.

Jag V8 so naturally it's going to keep going quite happily for a long time.
Debating one as a uni leaving present to myself next year, depending on how much overtime I can get at work.

Doesn't matter whether you've bought a £5000 or a £50,000 car - having to drop £400 for the sake of a £2 part stays annoying :p
That's not the same thing as it being an OMG I can't afford it this car is rubbish [why didn't I listen to OcUK] moment.

this thread has got me thinking about these. I know the brakes are scary money, and the tyres, and the suspension and and and and

but as a last hurrah, for 6 months before buying a house and a horrible box to tootle round in, how much can possibly go wrong?

Brakes are cheap. I did all discs and pads for under £500.
Tyres are cheaper than a lot of cars as they are only 18"
Suspension, yeah, dampers are the wrong side of £200 each and the bushings need replacing regularly.

The fluid leak I had fixed by a specialist last week. They replaced a bunch of other stuff in there while the charger was off including the EGR. The bill was £604 which was pretty reasonable.

It seems that if you have a good specialist near you and you can wield spanners yourself reasonably well, these can be kept running for not too much money. They are fairly simple cars with disparate electronic modules rather than a centralised system that's linked like many modern luxury cars. Most parts can be bought on Fleabay for not much cash and there doesn't seem to be anything that is prohibitively expensive to replace. Even gearboxes are £1500 ish fitted.
I've done 4000 miles in mine since I bought it last month and I've enjoyed every one of them. It's really quite a car and is effortlessly fast with it's diesel-like low-down torque but bonkers fast when you really want to push on.

cheers for that. I had seen scare stories of 1500 for brakes, etc. my current 330ci runs on 18s so i've been living with 18 pain for a couple of years already.

I probably wouldnt be keeping it that long - i think i can afford to run a car like that when i'm house sharing like i do now, but with my own property (which is on the cards when some family stuff shifts soon) it'd be a big no-no.

all in all it doesnt seem that much scarier than my current motor, and certainly more sensible than say, an M5 of the same era?

Any E39 M5 for £6k will be a shed.
I'd love an E39 M5, I really would but they only come in 2 conditions these days: Abused nails that need thousands spending on them, and totally mint garage queens that cost silly money.
2 owner, mid-mileage, cared-for examples just don't exist any more.
