It flew in to my house this evening. About 3cm long as you can see with the pound coin next to it.

What the hell is it?

Hmm, I just looked at wikipedia. Looks like a hornet indeed.
Glad I didn't try and catch it in my hand then. Hornet stings are nasty.

we had 3 of these suckers in our target shooting club caravan last week-they are no match for a blast from an airgun. they were huge and scared the hell out of me:eek:

suppose it's a hornet of some kind... never seen anything like that (big) in the UK before though... lucky you! prepare for the hornet invasion - I recommend a double barrelled acid super soaker with an insect killing smoke grenade to effectively defend your home.

I remember catching a hornet (I'm assuming it was because it looked very similar) but it had two barbs instead of one. Would this have been a certain variety, or just a dangerous mutant?

How the heck did you manage to catch it anyway?

It flew up againt the wall and stopped for a minute. Then I pounced with my trusty pint glass that I'd been using. I expect it's drunk now as there was a small amount of beer left in it.

Alpha to be honest! :p

I really hate wasps and hornets. I got stung when I was young and it really has made me hate them, spiders and the rest don't bug me though.

Forgive the pun? no? oh :(

Actually Hornets are rather civil.. if you get too close the local guards headbutt you first then if you ignore that then you're in the hurt locker.
