So, we have this little ginger cat which likes to always visit our kitchen window when we're inside. She (I think it's a she) always appears in the back-garden if I go outside and mews at me. Recently she's taken to wandering into the house, mewing, and rubbing herself around my legs. It seems that when it appears that it loves attention, constantly trying to get me to stroke it.

Today, I got back from town and was very thirsty. I popped into the kitchen and opened the back door to let some air in. I popped upstairs and when I returned, the little visitor was resting on a chair in the kitchen to get out the sun and mewing like crazy. I figured it must be thirsty so I gave it a little bowel of water which it lapped up in seconds. Afterwards it kept mewing at me every single time I went into the kitchen to do something and running up to me. It followed me into the garden and tried to get me to play with it, which I didn't fancy as the damn thing has claws. Just a moment ago, I went into the kitchen to once again be greeted by the mewing furball, and when it was rubbing itself around me, I stroked its head which it usually loves only for it to jump up, grab my hand with both paws and attempt to sink its teeth it. A little later it tried mauling my arm. I got annoyed with the damn thing so I picked up a towel and whipped it up its arse until it ran outside so I could close the door.

Now, why the hell is this cat running up to me - aside from cupboard love - and trying to get me to stroke it, only to then try to scratch the crap out of me?

It's sat by the window mewing at me like crazy as I type this. It'll get bored and disappear soon.

bloody gingers.

bloody cats.

bloody women

it's the three worst things in the world rolled into one.

It sounds like a young adult cat and it's playing. She sounds hungry, thirsty and short of affection from a human.
You've described exactly what happened to me over 13 years ago......the little cat is still with us and has been a marvellous pet for all those years. :D

Maybe it's hungry? Where do the owners live? Does it have a collar? Does it look like it's been kept in good condition. A lot of cats probably do the neighbour hood rounds of trying to get food but if it's a regular thing then maybe it's just being treated right by its owners?

A friend of mines brother had the same problem and they learnt after a while the cat had been abandoned when the owners moved. So they took it to the RSPCA and ended up adopting it :-)

Probably because it considers scratching fun and playful?
Yup, this'll be it. My two cats are both very playful and occasionally play too rough and scratch me or nibble me. They never mean to hurt me, they just do from time to time (as the current scars on my leg attest). It's just cats being cats.

I tried giving it a little bit of chicken but it wasn't interested. I don't know who the owners are, but they must be close by (it's a built up area), and yes - it has a collar. It looks a little thin, but I wouldn't say it's starving.

Agree with Davey, it's just playing, rather than giving it your hand, try using an old strip of towel, some string or something to play with, at least then you'll be able to tire it out!

Ginger cats are nuts by the way.. ours is absolutely insane, but very clever.

All of the cats we have had in the past have done this, all cats love lots of fuss and attention but as soon as they have had enough they let you know with their teeth or claws, even if it's owners are feeding it, if it gets more attention or food at your house it will treat you as though you are it's new owner (not uncommon for the average moggie to be fed by several people) it could have also been abandoned by it's owner and be living a feral type of lifestyle, feral cats are always more aggressive than household ones.
