What time are call centres not allowed to call you?

Just had a call on the house phone from some insurance type company at 8:59pm.

I asked why the hell they were calling at this time, plus they shouldn't be calling me anyway as i'm registered on the TPS which apparently doesn't mean squat to them.

I thought the cut off was at 8pm.

The number was 01792 311560 and apparently they are We Claim, U Gain.

****s!

Does ex-directory stop the cold calls? To be honest we have a landline for the net but I'm thinking of never bother plugging a phone in just to save the hassle, I go from chilled to totally wound up within seconds of a call from these sods.

Just sign up to the TPS (telephone preference scheme ) stops most if not all calls :)

I got called just after 9 a week or two ago from this Scottish company...

Wait.. Did I mention they ring everyday. 3 times today to be exact

Unfortunately over time even being on the TPS means nothing. We get between 3-5 calls a day, generally from charities (some of whom we already give to - amazing they don't bother checking their records), '2 minute' surveys or just general crap. Like some who call you then immediately hang up after you pick up. Makes my blood boil...

We've been on the TPS for some time too...

A lot of the data cold callers use comes from a database so ex-directory won't prevent anything. My old boss (used to work at a cold calling centre) says it's also legal for a company to ring you once even if you're on the TPS but not more than once. Can't confirm this though.

either some cowboy operation that doesn't plan on being in business long or you might have overlooked a tick box on an online form or neglected to tick a box/opt out on something you filled out at some point within the last couple of years which gave permission to the entity you filled the form out for to sell your number on.

As this guy said, TPS will only help limit the calls, not stop them altogether. Everytime you use a price comparison site, sign up for/buy a new service, enter a competition etc. You are basically agreeing to them having your details and selling them on to thirds parties, ie. the cold callers.

There should be opt options when in these instances, but, sometimes companies are a bit crafty and hide it away buried deep within the T&C.

Even if you're ex-directory they'll just use an auto-dialler to dial every conceivable phone number (0208 000 0001, 0208 000 0002, 0208 000 0003 etc) and then weed out the ones that are TPS'd if they're behaving.

Call OfCom and complain about these ones.

They're clearly a bit of a lame outfit given that they didn't bar their number from you.

Most usually hang up straight away when you tell them you are registered with the TPS.

Infact, most of the calls I get through now (after getting about 10 everyday when I first had the phone line put in) are from what sounds like foreign call centers, where they can probably get round it as they aren't UK based.

I had one Indian sounding guy who phoned up a few days ago and said "Hello, I'm from the Internet Protection & Security department". (LOL WUT!?)

"Of which company?"
"The internet protection and security department sir"
"You said a department... what company are you? Why are you calling me?
*Caller hangs up*

I tend to mostly get cold calls from fax machines though, even though I registered with the fax opt out service too.

I think they can occasionally be quite good fun though.
A recent one was from some company that had somehow got my data and knew my name and had rung up to offer me a gift voucher to spend on home improvements, such as conservatory, extension or loft conversion. She was reeling it off without letting me get a word in saying it wasn't a sales call and just wanted to know what the one thing I would like to improve in my home was, whether it was a conservatory, an extension, loft conversion etc.

I told her that I'd love a conservatory (I live in a Flat!).
She started yapping on about them... at which point I asked her how you would go about putting a conservatory on a flat and whether it was more expensive than a normal one! She was like... "Oh, sorry sir, the details I have for you must be wrong, I had you down as a house."

"So you can't put a conservatory on my flat?"
"No, terribly sorry *starts making excuses*.
"This is a sales call isn't it?"
"No *excuses*.
"I'm registered with the TPS, remove me from your database and don't ever call again."
*Caller hangs up*

A friend of mine actually once strung a guy in a call center along for nearly an hour talking about his life, by trying to change the topic everytime he tried to sell something. He put it on speakerphone for us to listen and put on a ridiculous dutch accent... was hilarious!
