i shoot a 450d with an efs 55-250mm f4-5.6 IS nearly always attached.

i have a little cash (£150) and i cant decide what to do. its either:

1) sell my 55-250 and add the cash then buy a canon ef 70-300 usm IS from a popular auction site for £300 ish
2) save a little more and buy a decent flash unit.

i also have a 50mm f1.8 and a kit 18-55 IS which im happy with. i shoot mostly outdoors but i also do portrait, family shots etc. i currently have no flash unit.

it might seem a bit trivial to a few of you but money to spend on camera equipment is a rarity for me nowadays so i have to get value from my purchases!

is the upgrade from my 55-250 to a 70-300 a wiser choice than buying a flash gun? sadly i cant have both!

Buy a 10-20mm!!!

Then you have 16-400mm covered (in 35mm)!!!! Groovy!!!

The 55-250mm is supposed to be pretty good anyways... and I don't like using flash, and since the 55-250mm is your most used lens the flash probably won't be really effective.

Agree about the effectiveness of the flash on a long lens. However, I wouldn't have thought that the 70-300 was a worthwhile upgrade.

Do you shoot landscapes often? If so, a filter kit could be a worthwhile investment. How about a tripod? Or a decent bag?

Personally, I'm starting to find the 18-55IS kit lens a bit limiting now - it's not as sharp as I would like and I notice chromatic aberration on outdoor images fairly frequently. Hence if it were me I would be selling the kit lens and using the cash to put towards a Tamron 17-50.

already got a decent bag, tripod & battery grip etc. surely im not running out of things to buy?! well i have run out of things to buy on a £150 budget possibly. not sure i would use a 10-20 and im pretty happy with my 18-55 for now.

guess i will set it aside and save for some really nice glass.

A flash still might be a good option then, but it depends on how much you want to diversify from the 55-250. You could definitely have some fun with the nifty and the flash, even more so with an off-camera flash control :)
