What to do about company I work for?

I'm hoping I can get some advice on my job situation. So I have just started a new job for an independent retail company, been there around 2 months but recently some issues have arrised that are making me question whether this is a safe job to stay in.

So it's all started from a stupid problem with management. My assistant manager sent me home the other day as I was really ill then proceeded to tell our manager I was making it up & then there's been another incident where she has told a customer I have lied about an order I did. The problem is both her and the store manager are friends and have previously worked together. Assistant manager had no experience of this role and has purley got it because of that. So now going in to work has become really awkward with this girl and I think she's really unprofessional. I also don't know if I can really trust the manager now either. Which is hard for me as I like to see the good in people but this is my career/future and I know I have to look out for myself.

And now that silly thing has got me thinking about the big problem and something I'm really worried about. The owners of the company have not given me a paper copy of my contract and there's no pension scheme. Is this even legal??? There's also no HR department so I have no one to bring these issues to and the owners are the worst to communicate with.

Part of me is thinking should I look for another job in a more solid & safe company. Would it look bad leaving a place after only a couple of months?

I just really need an outside opinion as I'm so confused and don't know if my gut of cutting ties so soon is right as I do love the job but I'm not loving everything else around it.

Apply for jobs now. Easier to do when employed, but seriously, just look elsewhere and get a new job.

Nice first post btw. Interesting place to come and post :D

It's absolutely an employee's job market out there at the moment, I agree with those who say find another job (but stay employed while you do it).

Stay employed, get a job elsewhere. I'll admit it's not a great start for you but stick it out as long as you can.

We are not all just pc geeks btw, there is plenty of life experience to share around these forums

Thanks everyone, you have all been really helpful so i am really thankful for that :D. So i've actually caught covid so i have actual proof im ill but managment are acting weird still making out i'm lying and asking me to come in. This might sound far fetched but i have this horrible feeling they want me out. We had a girl who yes she was bad at her job but the owners just wanted to get rid there and then without warning or a chance for her to redeem herself so the ethics of this place are really questonable at the moment and all im getting is theres only 3 of us we need to pull together. But i am sticking it out, looking for work (applied for a few jobs today) and 100% watching my back. Absolute shame though as i've been top seller since we opened, never said no to swapping shifts etc. gone above and beyond and now one little thing or big thing of falling ill and this happens.

Does sound like an awful place to work and the missing contract and pension are red flags. There are some rules around pensions you can read at: https://www.gov.uk/employers-workplace-pensions-rules If you've only been there two months then the bit near the bottom where they can delay for up to 3 months would give them a partial excuse ... BUT they should have told you in writing. I'm suspicious they want to manage you out of the job before they have to cough up for pension contributions.

Good luck on the job hunt. Take your abilities and positive attitude to somewhere that will appreciate it and treat you decently. I'm guessing you're young: chalk it up to experience and move on. Retail has massive staff turnover, so no-one is going to bat an eyelid when you're looking at other jobs.

I think with pensions they don't have to auto-enrol you for a period of time (3 months) or something like that. But read up on it as per above.

I wouldn't worry too much about the length of service, as long as you explain it the right way (i.e. you want to avoid giving the impression that you don't get on with people, even if it is their fault). But if a prospective candidate cited something like the fact they didn't have basic admin in place like written contracts, pension enrolment etc then I wouldn't think badly of them for leaving, it shows they want structure in place and adherence to regulations. Just present it in a neutral way and focus on why you want any other job you apply for - I remember interviewing someone once where they spent over half the interview (or at least it felt like it) saying why their current job/employer was bad, rather than saying why they wanted the job we were discussing, what skills they could bring etc.
