hia im after a bit of advice for what i can do after graduating with a HND electrical/instrumentation engineering.

im applying for the RFA as a systems engineer office but doubt ill get it.

i really need to get away from my hometown and would like to move away as far as possible really.

there are a few refineries, LNG terminals and a power station around where i live but unfortunately it looks like one of the refineries is shutting down, resulting in 400+ jobs being lost and i'm sure any possible vacancy in the other local refineries stations etc will be take up by them guys and gals.

any advice on what i could do??

am i missing any other opportunities that a HND gives me??

thanks

You could look at working on the Oil Rigs. I looked into this about 8 years ago. Did my medical and my helicopter dunking test, but found it hard to get in, so I gave up and went into factory maintenance work. Things might be different today though, there may be more opportunities.

Get a job in pretty much any heavy manufacturing industry.
Bump it up to a full degree?

do you need experience for something like that??

was thinking of that if i cant find employment. my college isn't doing the degree next year so would have to go away somewhere, which is ideal.

have contacted bangor uni so far about topping up to degree but no response as of yet.

finding it hard to find any real info on how to break into industry if i'm honest.

dont want to be one of those graduates who ends up working in tesco or some other form of retail for next 10 years.

Still very difficult to get into, one of the classic catch 22 situations of "need offshore experience" but you can't get any because all experiences require experience.

If you have mates that work offshore then speak to them about it as they will have more of an idea.

those two boys i know had an apprenticeship for 3-4 years at one of the local refineries.

they had no off shore experience but experience nonetheless

ive applied for a few apprenticeships as well but have done this in past and been unsuccessful.

might be considered "overqualified". or might even have to do all four years again....

See if you can apply for offshore instrument technician roles, there should be apprenticeship/junior roles about.

Get in contact with some Aberdeen based recruitment agencies, they should be able to help you out (although can be very hit and miss).
