What to do in Oxford?

TBH Carfax is crap, your best bet for views is to walk to a park called South Park, walk to the top of that, and you can get an amazing view of Oxford and ofc pack a picknic and your sorted :)

How is a massively high view right from the centre of the city for £1 crap??

It's far more impressive than the view from the top of South Park IMO.

You can come round my house for tea and biscuits?

I would recommend Blenheim Palace, but don't pay the entry price....go through the "kissing gate" in Woodstock ;) It will cost you a fortune in the cafe as they mark everything up so much... :D

Any more info on this mate? I am planning on going there on saturday, can i really avoid the entry fee?

You should be able to,either park in Woodstock (I think it's limited to 2 hours) or park up in Hensington Gate some where for a short walk (5 mins max) to the town centre. I will get a map up to explain all!

I used to work up there when I was a student and have never ever paid the entry price even with people I don't recognise around the palace. I doubt this has changed tbh and I highly doubt you will ever be asked for a ticket. You can do all the gardens and grounds, cafe...maze etc without a ticket.

Let me finish my soup/unpack some clothes from holiday and I will be back with better info for you Jez.

Wow, i would really appreciate that, thanks :)

Are you around there a lot? Should meet up for a race, i bet emily would be game :D

No worries, can it wait till tomorrow? Been traveling since 4am :(

Woodstock is my hometown... OllyM isn't too far away either and I sometimes spot his 530i around. I think I am suppose to be driving a bridesmaid to a wedding on Saturday mid afternoon in the center of Woodstock...so listen out for wedding bells and a V6 howl :p

In all honesty, there isn't much to do in and around Oxford - which is why I escape pretty much every weekend now :D

Blenheim Palace is great if you've never been before but kinda loses it's appeal after a while, I guess.

Agreed, the traffic system is becoming annoying anyway!

Living so close, I take it for granted. I worked there for 2/3 years as a student doing everything from catering to bar work, to weddings and have seen nearly every nook and cranny of the place. It it still an awesome sight in the summer and autumn, well worth a visit compared with Oxford...which will be full of Foreign students this time of year.

If you're staying in Headington and want to go out for a drink or two the easiest thing is to jump on any bus heading into town and get off in St Clements - if you head towards Cowley Road (get off the bus, walk towards town another 50 meters, turn left, the first exit off roundabout) there are lots of places to go - I like the Cape of Good Hope which is a pub right on the roundabout and just a few doors up there is Cafe CoCo and the Kaz Bar - both of which do food (and decent drinks).

A couple hundred yards further up Cowley road there is a good pizza place called Marios. If you feel particularly frisky and up for a (very) late night drink they basically serve Red Stripe 24/7 in a "bar" called Hi-Los (Jamaican money laundering service) which is also nearby.

Otherwise the only decent place to go out, as has already been mentioned, is Jericho, which is north of the city centre off St Giles (where Banbury Road and Woodstock Road split). I'd stay well clear of the Duke of Cambridge though, over priced and crappy drinks. My favourite bar in the whole wide world is on Walton street at the bottom of the street that the Duke is on (Little Clarendon street) - it's called Raoul's. I spend an unhealthy amount of time (and money!) in there... Otherwise further up Walton Street is the Jericho Tavern which is good, if a little bit on the trendy and fashionable side these days (you don't seem to fit in with the crowd unless you're wearing skinny jeans and a plad shirt...)

Errr, thinking about it, I don't actually know Oxford at all by day... only by night! :)

Jez, sorry for how late this was.....I have had a mad day selling my Golf, washing my zed, unpacking etc etc

P - is the best free place to park all day and nobody will care. The Oxford road is literally parallel by a bus stop and gets busy, but is free and next to Blenheim gates. These gates will ask for admission £££.

1 - There are green gates down near a pub called the "Black prince", there are two wooden gates which are near a house...which you need to simply open and close behind you. You are then in the grounds and can freely walk around :)

2 - Train (free) to the other side where the butterfly houses, maze, giant chess, garden cafe etc.

3 - The path to take if the train isn't there (10 mins walk).

Hope this helps and keep an eye out for a black 350z in the town centre mid afternoon ;)
