So I have just taken delivery of my 2x 7970 gpu,s

I need some advice on what to do.

I currently have my 5970 on 12.4 ATI drivers.

Do I uninstall the drivers 1st then install the cards and then download the new drivers? or install the 7970 drivers 1st, then remove the 5970 and insert the 7970s?

Or do I take the old 5970 out then replace the cards and then download and install the new drivers?

Also I have about 10 existing (CAP) Catylyst Apllication profiles, do I uninstall these profiles?

I will insert 1 card 1st then test, then insert the 2nd card.

Please can someone advise me step by step the best way to install/delete old and the new drivers.

Please advise asap

thankyou

Personally I'd remove all current drivers/CAP's, remove 5970, install 7970's, download and install latest drivers and CAPs.

ok cheers, i will do just that and report the results soon,

Ps what free benchmarking programme can i use to measure the FPS on my new cards?

Could try 3DMark 11 or Heaven, there are threads for both on here so you can compare with others (and they can give you advice on overclocking for higher results). If you meant a frame rate counter, then Fraps or Afterburner works well. Afterburner is also good for overclocking and monitoring temps etc. I use Fraps for frame rates and Afterburner for temps and overclocking.

oh to add, a free dx11 benchmarking software to measure the graphics peformance and display the results which I can then compare between my 7970 and 5970.

where are they on this site, cant seem to locate the download link?

My results on my new cards

Ok so I have a 5970 and recently purchased 7970s xfire, before instaltion of my new cards I ran a benchmark test with Heaven DX11 Benchmark 3.0 on my dell 27 inch on 2560x1440, bench test done on normal settings:

Render: direct3d11
Mode: 2560x1440 2xAA fullscreen
Shaders: high
Textures: high
Filter: trilinear
Anisotropy: 4x
Occlusion: enabled
Refraction: enabled
Volumetric: enabled
Tessellation: normal

the results below on my old 5970. (not overclocked)

Heaven Benchmark v3.0 Basic
FPS: 42.3
Scores: 1065
Min FPS: 17.6
Max FPS: 88.0

Then I placed in a single 7970 with new drivers and got this:

Powered by Unigine Engine
Heaven Benchmark v3.0 Basic
FPS: 51.8
Scores: 1304
Min FPS: 30.1
Max FPS: 108.9

Then I inserted my final 7970 wich made it 7970 xfire and got these results:

Powered by Unigine Engine
Heaven Benchmark v3.0 Basic
FPS: 101.0
Scores: 2544
Min FPS: 30.4
Max FPS: 210.7

So I saw a steady increase in FPS, which is good, one thing that got me very worried was during the last test on xfire mode the temps went up to 90+ and then I smelt a plastic burny smell, Now when I had my 5970 xfire set up the fans sucks in cool air from the end of the card and this travels through the card heating up egjecting at the other end, but these cards I have dont have vents on the end, they hace dual fans, so I dont know how that works but it went very hot, when the benchmaking finished the temps shot down to a stable 42. Now I really dont want my cards hitting those temps so I will monitor and see what happens when I game.

Mind you I have defo noticed a speed and faster loading times in the benchmark, Anoth issue which causes the heat is my gigabyte ud7 Mobo has its pci16 slots right next to each other do both the cards are right next to each other only being seperated by 4ml, thats why I couldnt by bigger cards as Ive no space for xfire, I had to stick to a maximun width of 4ml.

Has anyone else got the same set up but got better results?

Ps becuase of the high temps during full load, can I underclock a gpu pr reduce the clock settings?

cheers, feedback would be great.

Why the multiple threads?

Regarding temperatures - what is your case like for airflow? There's no point having two powerful graphics cards and then underclocking one....

What chipset ud7, the majority of the latest gens have multiple pcie slots, usually the first and third slot for x16/x16. That should give you ample spacing.

Edit: even ref 7970's shouldn't be hitting 90c, what's the temps on each card individually?

Hi, sorry for the long thread.

I have monitored my new cards for a day now and through CCC it shows that both cards are hitting 50c

But the issue is when I start playing games on the maximum settings one of the cards hit 90c, the 2nd card is around 50c

See the problem is that my Mobo a gigbyte Ud7 has 2x pci e16 slots, so when I use these slots both 7970s are right next to each other only seperating them by a few mm, so the 1st card has 2 dual fans on the top, the 2nd card is so close that when the 1st card fans start spinning it is getting less air, so I have had to wedged a plastic pen between the 2 cards so it creates some space between the 2 cards.

If I run 1 card then its perfect temps, having both heats up the 1st card 90c+

On my mother board both cards take up 2 spots so I cant seperate the 2 cards as I dont have enough space, I mean I dont want to return 1 card as that is not what I wanted, I opted for these cards as they are within 4 cm width, I originaly wanted the Asus tripple fan card or the MSI one but they are 5 CM in width and will take 3 spots on my mobo so running xfire is not possible.

When I had my 5970 xfire I never had a problem because the cards sitting right next to each other caused no issues, Why because the 5970 had vents at the end of the cards which meant that cool air was sucked in from the end of the card passed through and exiting at the other end, so the air was passing through internaly,

The 7970s are of dual fans with no vents at the end so the air is sucked infront of the card, so running xfire on these is blocking the 1st card of air, hence why I have wedged a pen inbetween the cards to create space.

I have a coolermaster cosmos sport case which has a big fan on the side, but I have taken this off because of the cooling issue.

I think the only option I have is:

Get rid of 1 card (I really want xfire as the results as above is a massive boost)

Retun both cards and get the refrence single fan versions so air is sucked in through the end of the cards, so both cards sitting right next to each other wont be a problem

get a new mobo with more pci e slots so I can have a gap in the middle.(would have to sell current mobo, cpu ram to generate funds)

cant think of anything else.

any thoughts of a fix ect? has anyone else experiance a similar issue?
