Short Version:

Myself and my girlfriend could do with a semi decent car, 6-8k per year mileage. Either really cheap to run and reliable ( ala 107 aygo ) or something a bit nicer but for the times we do drive it will be more fun.

Price £3.5k ---> £15k at a push or the equivalent monthly payments

Long Version:

I currently have a 55 Plate Mondeo TDCI with 130k on the clock which will need around over £1000 spending shortly:

* Dual Mass Flywheel / Clutch
* Wheels / brakes
* Crankshaft Pulley / Belt / Tensioner

So I am going to have to spend about what the vehicle is worth to keep her on the road....

My girlfriend owned a Kia Picanto 08 plate which was crashed earlier this week and has now been written off =( She has had to rent a cheap car to get to work for the moment.

I am currently driving 200 miles daily and she is driving around 100. Shortly things will change when we finally get our apartment in Manchester City Centre ( we have our mortgage offer hoping to exchange and complete in next 2 weeks ... ) and we won't actually need to drive a whole lot but I would still like a car.

Anyway, we were ultimately planning on selling both cars and getting a single new one to share. This is now a little more urgent due to daily rental being a bit of a waste of money. I like the idea of particularity cheap lease but I do not want this to affect our mortgage or house.

So.. suggestions of cars, methods of purchase would be appreciated!

If it was me i would just keep the mondeo and spend a little keeping it going. It sound like you wont be using it much once you move so why not keep something that will cost the least in the long run. Save the rest to make capital payments on the mortgage!

you are not going to get favourable responses to this. You effectively have zero requirements other than a really broad budget and you're basically asking us to pick what's best for you... well with that budget who ****ing knows!

With no actual requirement for a car and this little information, along with no children to kart around, i see no alternative than an SL55 AMG.

It is nippy, comfortable, and fun.

Mondeo ST220
or lease a new Fiesta ST there meant to be really good and only cost about £200 p/m on ford options.
Get something thats gonna be entertaining to drive when you do use it.

Do you have any preferences? Sporty or something with enough space to hold a family and their two labradors? Ongoing costs not a problem or is reliability and cheap parts a must? etc...

If you don't need lots of space and the car is just for you + girlfriend then how about a mazda mx5? Enjoyable for the times you'll use it, cheap and reliable.

When I say 3.5k to 15k. I mean options at those ends of the scale:

ie 3.5k - small cheap reliable runabout
15k a bit nicer, quicker perhaps brand new.

MX5 seems or Fiesta ST3 seem like good options...

With your upcoming move, it sounds like your going to keep the car in a garage/car-park for 90% of the time.

You're worried about daily rental being a "waste of money"

Therefore the most sensible option seems to be to spend a 1 off £1,000 on the current car, rather than "waste" £200+/month on something that's going to spend the majority of it's life doing nothing anyway.
