What to do (purchasing GPU)

I haven't played wow in ages so these instructions are imprecise.

Go into your WoW folder.
Delete everything in the cache folder.
Rename the WTF folder to WTF.old and make a new WTF folder.
If there are any *.wtf files in the root, rename them to *.wtf.old
Back up your interface folder.

Restart WoW, see if that helps (the cache folder or config.wtf is likely to be a culprit)

Ok when I get home I will run a few game and make a note of the FPS I am getting. I will then chuck them in this thread in order to find out if they are what is expected of this type of card...

Right I did what was suggested to no avail. I then removed all traces of any graphics drivers using the suggested tool in the top thread here and rebooted and reinstalled the graphics drivers. No success.

I then tried to run Crysis. I get approximately 40FPS running Crysis at 1900x1200 with all settings at Gamer and 2xAA.

In wow with all settings on full and 1xAA I get 8FPS at 1900x1200.

I am now scratching my head as to what can cause this. Are we saying that a 4870 cannot handle WOW on full at 1900x1200 whereas my old 8800GTX could fine?

Am also getting a little fed up with it all and so might just replace the whole damn system with a new computer....

I had a 8800GS, followed by a 4870 (512M). The 8800 never had any problems with WoW, the 4870 locks at 60fps with everything on max, and never wavers. Your 4870 should be able to chew that game up absolutely no problem.

FWIW, my 4870 ran the last Aion beta really well too, mostly 40-70 fps depending on where I was. It's a damn fast card and should easily hold you for 6 months.

I guess this is the horrid "switching from Nvidia to ATI" issue that i reckon is built into the drivers so that it always makes the latter slower than it should be.

Bugger. Ok format/reinstall to take place this weekend at latest. I shall report on progress shortly.

EDIT: Actually I might try reinstalling WOW first...

Thanks for the reply's so far.

Well I run games at 1900x1200 resolution and have done for approximately a 2 years (with initially 7900GT in SLI then a single 8800GTX). My concern is spending a wad of cash on something now and then next month or so something 10 times better coming out.

Thats what happened when I purchased the 8800GTX, about 1 month later they released the next gen cards at roughly the same price! (DOH!).

Does anyone have any clue as to the release dates of the next gen cards as I dont seem to be able to find any information on them anywhere??

New cards are likely to arrive sometime around November. ATI and nvidia seem to have been aiming for the Oct 22 release of Windows 7, but have experienced manufacturing issues so we are expecting delays, especially with the nvidia card.

Getting a mid-high end card now, like the 4890, or the GTX270 which you can get for £150, would be a good buy right now. The next-gen cards will (probably) offer performance around twice that of the GTX270, but will almost certainly cost more than twice as much. A GTX270 or a 4890 would hold its value very well should you choose to upgrade again when the new cards come out.

Right. I have rebuilt my computer completely (well dual booted it) and still no joy. World of Warcraft on Full at 1900x1200 is giving me about 10fps...

Are you all sure that the card should be able to perform better??

As I have previously stated my NVidia 8800 GTX handled wow fine...

I've been reading on the WoW forums & from what I can gather it's a problem with WoW & the current AMD/ATI graphics cards, either a driver issue OR WoW needs a patch to solve the problem.

If your a keen WoW player I would see if you can exchange the 4870 to a GTX275.

Just to add to this, if you read in here http://forums.amd.com/game/categories.cfm?catid=229

Their is topics going back to around September 2008, looks like when a patch was introduced by Blizzard i.e. 3.1 or something that messed up FPS rate with AMD/ATI cards with World of Warcraft.

The only fix you have is to switch to an Nvidia card for gaming with WoW.

OK sorry to ressurrect an old post but after speaking with overclockers and doing some more testing it does seem to effect a few other games. Overclockers reckon that its my PSU not having enough amps?

My PSU is 700w Jeantech which was happily powering 2 x 7900GT's SLI about 3 years ago, then a single 8800GTX. Can anyone advise as I know nothing about psu's :(((

Just tried GTA4 and its even laggy at 1280x1024???

help meeeee........
(please :P)

4870 for a month then sell it for 70 quid and get a decent 5870 answer in a month or so
