What to do to keep spiders at bay... ?

Another vote for conkers, something to do with a chemical they don't like.

It's actually Chestnuts not Horse Chestnuts (conkers) that they hate.

There is a local spider problem around here owing to living next to a large lake. Local shops stock a spray "No more spiders" - contains Chestnut Oil and Clove Oil, doesn't kill them but wards them off. Apparently they don't like citrus smells either so things like Pledge polish work around the places they come in.

I had some massive ones the last few weeks. about 2 inches wide and 2 inches long including the legs and a body the size of a 20pence. This was the biggest spiders i have seen that was not in captivity. I kill them on site with a flip flop or a shoe. Then leave the body parts on the wall to scare off other spiders.

I had a cannibal spider in the corner by the light. It had one of its own kind in a web and it was so fat. When i hit it, you could tell it had eaten too much. You know times are bad when we have cannibal spiders.

This was my understanding of the old wives tale also but I've never tested it as I like spiders hell I had to rescue one from my brothers room yesterday he was quite large and almost bigger than the pint glass I used to catch him.

Eat 4 conkers, then poop out the remains of the conkers (you may need to separate the conker poop from your other poop). Once you have it, smear over your windows and doors.

For extra spider security, pee in a cup and leave it in the centre of your room. Oh, and apply mustard to your slippers.

I'm glad I imagined that after lunch and not before.

I'm not so glad that I have a very active visual mind and tend to visualise everything I read and hear!
