Hi guys,

Im in the market for a new car at the moment around £5000, originaly i was planning on getting a Mk4 Golf GTI Turbo but have since decided against that after hearing a lot of negative things about it.

My parents have been on holiday for a few weeks and whilst they are gone they have let me keep their lexus is200 round mine and use as and when, now i've grown really attached to this car and am really considering looking into buying one of these.

However i was on pistonheads just now looking at what i could afford and a couple of 2001 BMW 318Ci Coupe's cropped up, how would you guys rate these??

What's it to be then, the golf, lexus or the Beemer, anything else i could consider??

Thanks.

For 5k I wouldnt bother with prestige cars, as nice as they can be you're going to be looking at the lower spec (318...) and probably higher mileage.

You'll get a lot more for your money with more standard cars. You could probably get a nice Passat/Mondeo for that sort of money

The BMW 4 pots are just badge buddies really, geta 6 pot or something else. Usual OCUK 5k recommendations would be a Clio 182 ;)

Fiesta ST maybe? Depends, as you said Golf GTI, then go onto BMW's and Lexus'...

What size you after? :)

100 odd grand yeah sure ill right you out a check 2mo but it may bounce back in your face lol!!!!!!!!!

st ford sounds good too i think your look nice in one of these it would have to be red thought! Dont think green wouldnt suit you as im sure you know why :)

£5k drops you in most of the BMW range as long as two things don't bother you, age & miles.

I spent just over £5k on an e38 7 Series a few years back and despite fears of high running costs, it was not that bad at all. Ok A Mondeo would have been cheaper (and I eventually changed it for one!) but the BMW was cartainly a solid, reliable car that could still cut the mustard with far more modern cars for second hand Mondeo money.

Try a 318Ci by all means, but also, try the 6 pot variants imo (and others) the 6 pot is the far nicer car to drive although the 4 pot is the better balanced (not so nose heavy)

Its personal choice, the 318i is a respectable performer with good handling, but, it'll never be a tyre shredder, nor was it ever ment to be mind.

The bigger you go, the more you'll get for your money.

I'd consider an e39 5 Series (ok, an OcUK stereotype, but, for a damn good reason) £5k should find you a very nice example with a bit of homework.

Personally, I perfer the BM's to Lexus (imo why have a Lexus when you can have the real deal?)

Also depends on what sort of size you're after? Small/hot hatch or larger?

Clio 172/182 for this sort of money if you're after a small sporty number.

Could you at least try to construct a proper sentence?
