What to do with fireplace

We've bought a house (STC) and not sure what to do with the fireplace. The vendor has offered us the electric fire in the picture for purchase although we are not really interested.

The issue we have is with the TV, our TV is quite big so wouldn't really fit in the corner. We are thinking of getting rid of the fireplace all together and having the TV wall mounted. One other option is making the fireplace smaller and having a small gas stove and the TV above that although I'm not sure if the heat will play havoc with the TV.

Any ideas?

Whatever you plan to do aside, if the fireplace is fixed in, I'd expect it to be included in the sale of the house. Not some optional purchase. Especially if it says in the estate agent blurb about having an "attractive fire place" in the living room, etc.

There's no blurb in the advert. We did a second viewing yesterday, the vendor showed us around. It was basically a sales pitch to sell the electric fire lol. He said the fireplace would be staying. He wants 150 quid for this fire. It's dimplex Optimyst and the reviews don't look good. I don't like the fire anyway and I think it's a bit cheeky.

Macca there's no chimney. He did say there used to be gas fire there. He did mention a flue. Still undecided to get rid of the fireplace altogether or get a new fireplace with one of them gas stoves which look like a log burner.

Take it out, put underfloor hitting in, enjoy space.

Fireplaces are a such a throwback i really don't know why all new builds have the nasty things these-days.

Give me a real open fire any day, in use that is, not with a pretty vase or candle standing in it. :)

We're in the process of removing ours for the reason of space/massive tv. I just had the gas fire disconnected on Friday night and I'm waiting on a quote to brick up and replaster. If I get a quote quickly I can post it on here for reference.

Thanks that would be useful. It looks like we will go down the same route.

Rip the fireplace out. And call their bluff on trying to sell you the fire, it will be useless to them most likely and cost them an electrician to remove.

Not dissimilar to our old lounge fireplace. When it came up to us wanting to replace the carpet we had the whole lot taken out and swapped for a hole-in-the wall type of gas fire instead. Its handy for those rare occasions you get a power cut in the winter - at least one room can be warm.

Other advantage is that the mantle piece was a magnet for all sorts of random crap that should have been binned or tidied up. Taking that away imposed some discipline.

Ask others have said, vendor is taking the mick with expecting extra for the fire.
