Hey,

I've got my hands on around 16 80gb sata hdd's and was wondering what to do with them.

I was thinking of maybe using them as 2 x 8hdd stacks purely for backing up family photos.

Anyone know the best way of doing this?

I remember seeing a video of a guy who made an external exclosure and put in several HDD's to use as a backup solution but that must be 2-3 years ago now and can't find it.

I know it would be easier just to buy a couple of external hdd's but this might be more fun with tinkering :p and they hdd's were free :)

You've touched on it in a round about way... and that's the cost here

a ready made solution... DAS box,,, 8 bay,,, will cost in the region of 700 quid

I've no idea if you could build a home brew solution from scratch... but I'll keep an eye out for that video

tried Youtube?

EDIT

how about a couple of Icydock 3/4 hot swap bays.... possible if you've got a tall tower case or eSATA external hot swap bays ?

or a couple of these

Sell them and use the funds to purchase a 2TB disk, easiest all round and cheaper in the long run to power.

OR get one of those desktop SATA disk adapters where you literally sit the disk on it and it spins up, giving quick/easy access. Could use all 16 for backups.
