what to do with my B&W DM220's

Give them to me <3

I like the look of the oldschool audio, I think they're look pretty cool. I suppose its whether you have another half who likes to call the decor shots.

A new enclosure could be difficult, unless you copy the original design in a new suitable material. Painting could also go a bit wrong and leave you nothing to go back on, unless you can cleanly remove the veneer and refinish what's left.

^ Agree with this, tho they may be a much for rear surround however...

I've got some DM110's (I think), look very similar...

Keep 'em, dont make another enclosure, it's not worth the hassle.

Do you still have the cloth grilles?

This is unrelated (well, slightly related):

On Monday I thought I'd pop to a local car boot sale. The wife followed along, which turned out to be a PITA.

Whilst walking along I spied a pair of old (~1994) Rega Xel floorstanders (their flagship speakers at the time at a cost of £1,100) which looked a bit tatty with the grille material long since torn off and lots of cup rings on their tops and a donk to the rear corner of one. The seller assured me the drive units were all fine and they worked (the woofers felt fine - no grinding). I fell in love with them.

They were spankingly good speakers in their day (and still are). A bit of elbow grease and they would've look spot on, although still monolithic. The bloke wanted £20 for them.

The wife said no way. Apparently they were too ugly (not that my Totem standmounters on hideous stands are any better). Women.

As for your speakers - leave them be. The drive units probably aren't worth the effort of making up new enclosures for, and if you don't have the knowledge it is very difficult to get them sounding any good anyway. Painting will prbably make them look worse, but if you must do something, I recommend you try Fablon sticky backed faux-wood sheeting.

Yeah, I'm really hacked off that I left them there. I saw other people looking at them, but passing on them because they looked pretty ragged.

In the end SWMBO told me to just buy them (after I assured her I'd feed and water them daily and said pleasepleasepleasepleasepleaseplease - in a similar manner as I would've when I was 5), but in the kind of tone that I'd seriously regret it later.

GAH!!

Well at least you knew what they were, I'm sure 99% of people out there haven't even heard of Rega. ;)

I couldn't care really if something looks a little tatty, it's all about the sound for me, but £20 normally only gets you speaker cable let alone speakers!

Hifi speaker design hasn't really changed much in the last 20 years, and I'm sure they'd still sound great today, I won't go on tho as I'm sure I'm not helping here! :o

i might just keep then as is then as a 2nd setup set. as said they still sound fantastic so theyll happily sit in a spare room.

Do you still have the cloth grilles?

unfortunately not, they were fatally wounded several years (more like 10 eek) back.
