What to do with this protruding grid in garden?

Hi,

I'm looking for some ideas please, maybe someone has dealt with something similar?

The grid protrudes from the ground and the grey bit up to the paving is concrete so I cant put grass around it, the previous owner covered it up with loose bricks which I want to remove

I am going to dig up the grass and re-turf to the right and I was hoping I could turf around the grid but after removing the bricks and discovering the concrete I cant

Any ideas?

Thanks

Smash concrete, remove the grid, take a couple of rows of bricks out if it then use an inset one. Then just continue the bricks you have over it :)

Or alternatively, smash concrete out, turf over it and plonk some kind of planter on top of the grid?

Thanks, not sure I'm willing to smash out the concrete, knowing my luck with these things I'll end up smashing a hole into the sewer, I figure the previous people must have left the concrete for a reason

What about permanently cementing the some of the bricks in around the edge and filling it with loose stones? I only idea I can come with that doesn't involve anything drastic and too much time/money

Got one on the other side, good suggestion though

I think I'm going to make a border from the brick in the pics and fill it with loose slate stones and then put a bird bath in the middle

Never done anything with brick before so going to read up on how you make it level, suggestions greatly received, thanks

That's probably the top of a large manhole with a standard cover on it.

I'd sleeper around and create a little zen garden with a small bonsai and stone then if you ever need to access hasn't been compromised.

Me, I would probably raise the rest of the paving to the same level and change the cover to a recessed one you can slot paving into.

Or hid it with a raised bed of some kind.

I've got a plan thanks guys, well two really, one to try first and a backup if that fails. I'll post the results in the coming weeks. Noting amazing TBH but will be an improvement to what you can see now

Are you sure covering it up is a good idea? If there is a blockage or it needs to be surveyed then covering it up could potentially make things more difficult for whoever is doing it.

You could lift the manhole cover and take a look but the concrete's probably there for a reason certainly whoever did the block paving thought so and left it be, and covering it over is a bad idea if you ever get blocked drains. There are replacement drain covers that can be filled with block paving to match the rest but the rest of the paving would need to be flush. A shallow layer of turf isn't much help either as it'll dry out and turn brown and stick out like a sore thumb in summertime.

Drain covers are a PITA if you have a high enough damp proof you could raise the land surface or put a raised decking or even a "feature" (small statue or something, with shingle around it easy to sweep back if you need access)
