I took a photo of a squirrell I quite like, but it needs something doing to it and I dont know what.

What do you think?

Crop the branch in the foreground away.. its distracting. Also try and get his eye further away from the middle of the shot. Adjust the levels a bit so the black is tiny bit darker, and the whites whiter. Mainly the lighter tones need to be brought out.

personally I like the branch if you could make a feature of it
looks like you're peering sneakily at the critter
however that's often lost in a print I think
I would play with the levels a bit first tbh, get some clarity and colour back
the annoying feature I think is the bench....
it's in the depth of field and a very bold shape and colour which distracts from the subject

/p.s I might be talking utter crap tbh

true, you could cheat!
but surely composition includes setting up the shot so there are few distractions
okay, so I'm crap at this sort of cloning but do you see what I mean?

I was thinking in context of the post in GD, you could give him an icecream.

On a serious note, bring out the colours, especially those of the critter himself, and see what it is like with/without the branch. I also agree ideally his eye doesn't want to be in the center of the picture.

Something a bit bigger.

I think best best is to add a different background.

As said, a stump of somesort.

The current is too distracting.

the DOF seems a lot better for isolating the subject when cropped in a touch, I think it seems so on the alteration I made anyway

If you have to start cutting the main subject in a photo out and sticking him on a new background, its time to re-shoot the image! It'll give you something to aim for, thats what I (and many I'm sure) have always done. Take some photos of something, see if they work and if they don't work out why not and then keep that in mind next time. Its the best way to improve.

The only time I'd suggest cutting the subject out is if its a bird in the sky on a dull grey day, the adding a blue background is ok IMO - although its still something I don't really do myself.

Disclaimer:- I am very new to this photediting malarky, I am probably getting things very wrong and things are probably still very noticable

Just had a quick (about 5 - 10 minutes go at it)

smallsquirrell-1.jpg

is what I came up with

didnt do much, just blured the background slightly, had a tiny little tweak on the levels, a touch of a crop to get the squirrel a closer to the left hand border and added a border.

It would probably take the people who know what they are doing abotu 2 mintues to do what I did and a lot better, but there are things you can do to help a little

EDIT
it might be worth selecting the bench and maybe playing with the saturation a bit to remove a little of thre redness so it doesent distract
