Now I realise this is an ongoing debate.

Here is the situation. My Dad loves his computers and is getting on a bit.

Just upgraded him to a 4Gb, Vista Ultimate, Quad core machine clocked to 3GHz. Put a temp graphics card in 8400GS until the 9800 came out.

I wanted him to have pretty much the latest and greatest so it was a given that the 9800GTX was going to be purchased as we have £200 to spend.

My dad only plays Flight Sim as games go and likes it to be smooth.

Now he doesnt know all the technical things but do I go for the super offer on the 8800GTX or get him the 9800GTX just so he feels he has the best.

The money difference isnt an issue and he is running a 19" 1280x1024 monitor with a view to upgrading that eventually.

Sorry for rambling but what would you do?

the 9800 GTX will be faster at that res.

On the other hand if in the near future you will be upgrading monitor then the 8800 GTX will be best.

9800 GTX starts to fall behing at high res (1920 x 1200 and above) especially if you start and apply any AA.

Not sure upgrading to Vista counts as giving your dad the latest and greatest though :D

Its FSX with the acceleration pack.

1280x1024 atm.

My only thing was him having the latest for his new machine. I suppose the 9800GTX is the way to go.

be careful, though... they just upped the price on the XFX deal...

They said they would today and it's going up again on Wednsday. A bit mean when it was originally advertised as "this week only until Wednesday". You might expect to have got it at the old price if you weren;t ready to order until tonight unless you have read the forum.

It was mentioned in the forums that the £164 price was only till today, then it would revert back to its original TWO price till Wed.

Hm, same thought here - I thought it was valid for a week so did not rush. Now have to face the wrath of wifey who said to get it immediately. And I spent this week's pocket money . . .

cjph

haven't had much Net access this week... really gutted...

I bet, tbh, it should have been mentioned on the XFX GTX's product page that the £164 was only till today, then it would go back to it original TWO price, but it just said This Week Only Offer on it in red, with the £164 price, only way you would have known that was till today, is trawling through the forums over the weekend, then you may have come across it posted in a thread.:(

To get back on topic though, id get the 8800 GTX, as its got more memory and a bigger bus, shouldn't matter that the 9800 GTX is slightly faster at the lower resolutions, as its not surprising really seen as its clocks are higher, so just clock the GTX up, plus the 8800 GTX is cheaper, so as it stands, 9800 GTX is totally worthless, and will be until the 8800 GTX's are gone, or the 9800 GTX's come down in price so they cheaper than it. :)

Juast no point buying a slower card with less memory, smaller bus, for a higher price.
