ok i got £400 burning a hole and want to upgrade my gtx 260........... spec :- i7 930 @4Ghz 6 gig ram and mechanical h/d do i go for a 480/580 or a lesser gfx card ie 470 and a ssd ?

If you're not interested in AMD the I would suggest the cheapest 580 you can find, it's getting great reviews. Bare in mind when AMD do introduce their new GPU's it may lower the price on the 580 or it may not.

I would wait for 6900 to launch i think you'll get a better card for the money.

I and many others have the same idea.

well actually i have 2 260's in SLi but i still imagine its a good upgrade? and could i use a 260 for a phyx card or wouldnt it be worth it?

What hard drive do you have, and what speed?

If you have 260 sli and unless you play at very high resolutions I would suggest perhaps spending some of the money elsewhere on your system. An ssd would make a sensible consideration.

What's your CPU like? WoW is built upon a fairly CPU intensive engine, even with the Cataclysm graphics which have balanced out the CPU/GPU war a bit, but there's still a lot down the CPU you're using ;)

I don't play WoW but as I understand it, it is a very cpu intensive game (like all multiplayer titles), and even a nice, highly clocked cpu like yours can still struggle in certain areas. A 470 would probably give you higher minimum frame rates and generally smoother gaming without the possibility of any potential sli issues. I think I'm right in saying that a 470 is roughly equivalent to sli 260's, maybe a little under actually, but when overclocked it can draw level. So while a 470 would not probably give 'that' much extra in the way of maximum frame rates, in other respects it would bring some nice benefits.

A 470 and an SSD would be a brill upgrade.

I have this SSD very good and one of the best around for the money:

as for the 470,i would get this personally :

Has a brilliant cooler and a half decent overclock which you can increase more to bring it up to a GTX 480s level.

There are other 470s that are brillant prices, but with the standard reference cooler which will be a lot louder and run hotter than the 470 ive listed.:)

ok thanks for the replies, TBH i've had no probs with Sli in the years i have been using it and another thought crossed my mind for my budget i could go 2x460 sli and ssd or just bite the bullet and get a 580 and ssd l8r

Brilliant coolers on these cards aswell

and still have enough money for the ssd:http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-007-CR&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=910

a 460 sli would be a superb setup, not sure if Catalysm will be optimized for SLI mind?
