What to get from America?

My brother is in America at the moment and he's asked me what i'd like as a present. Now, i can't really think of anything at all, but it struck me that i'll be needing a laptop for my last year of uni. With the current exchange rate i imagine i could get quite a good deal (i'd be giving him the money for it when he gets back).

So, is it worth buying one in the states? I don't need anything special, just need it for word processing. Obviously i'd need a new power plug (is this hard to get?) but would there be any other problems?

The warranty is a good point, enough to put me right off actually. Is there a way round this? Paying the import tax wouldn't be a problem :p

Parts for my car are pointless as he's unlikely to want to lug anything particularly bulky around with him, and regardless i'm saving for a new car.

A PS3? I can't say that interests me in the slightest anymore, i was never much a console gamer anyway and now i don't really play any games at all except a bit of CSS occasionally :( Good suggestion though :p

Depends what it is, Ipods for example come with an international warrenty, so it doesnt matter where you buy it you can get it replaced/repaired where ever you end up in the world.

Hmm, any laptop manufacturers that do an international warranty?

I bought a video camera in the states, picked it up for £600 as opposed to the £1200 rrp price tag it has over here! I just got rid of the box and put it in a camera bag in case I got stopped by customs. And if it breaks I can just buy another one and wouldn't have lost out :p

You dont have to pay import tax, just dont declare it.

If you go through the nothing to declare channel and they stop you, they can take your goods, issue you with a bill for the taxes you tried to avoid and also a fine.

If it's a gift then you don't have to pay taxes iirc, remember this isn't the OP going and bringing something back, it's his bro getting something for him.
