What to get from America?

If it's a gift then you don't have to pay taxes iirc, remember this isn't the OP going and bringing something back, it's his bro getting something for him.

I think the limit for gifts is £36

Couldn't remember if the limit before duty etc was incurred was £36 and gifts didn't have it, or if it was just a blanket £36. Is it that any goods under £36 you don't charged?

*edit* found the info :)

Are there any reliefs from Duty and VAT?
Yes, they include:
Goods of £18 or less in value (excluding postage, packing and other miscellaneous costs) this does not include alcohol, tobacco products, perfume or toilet waters.
Gifts from one private individual to another providing the value does not exceed £36. (Exception: There is a very restricted gift allowance on excise goods but you are advised to contact Customs for further information.)
Personal effects of people returning to the EU after residing abroad.
Goods found to be defective or damaged or not otherwise as ordered. (Customs must be notified before qualifying goods can be returned overseas. Otherwise duty relief may be lost.)
Goods imported into the EU for processing and repair before re-export from the EU. (Your local office of HM Customs and Excise can provide you with further details.)

if you get a PS3 you will need a MASSIVE step down transformer unless it can take 240 peak?

Why would you need a "massive" step down transformer?

How can they tell if you bought it over there or not if you got rid of the box etc?

They can ask to see a receipt.

They can check product type - some are only available in the US.

They can check serial numbers.

For a laptop, a US keyboard is a bit of a giveaway.

I think the onus is on the traveller to prove the origin of the goods.

This is for things being posted... if someone's bringing it back with them then the duty-free limit's currently £145 of goods from the US. The limit's doubling in the summer, which is nice. :)
