What to get in the Indian?

I've been to a good few Indians over the past couple of years but I usually just go for something like chicken korma and naan bread and nothing really adventurous. I'll be having dinner with a few 'wimps' tonight who aren't too fond of spicy foods so I'll have to get some mild dishes. Can anyone recommend any mild dishes I could get?

Here's what I'm thinking of getting

Chicken korma - safe choice
second dish?
pilua rice
peshwari naan

Anything else I should get?
 
Yeah something different, sod the korma. If you want a creamy mild dish. Many places do other stuff give them a go. My local does one called a Makhani far nicer than a korma.
Naway is another nice mild dish
Tandoori mixed grill.
Or a honey tikka is sweet and mild as well.
Biryani
Have you got a menu?

Also get rid of the naan and try a paratha for a change.

Ask the waiter when you get there. If it is a decent restaurant they can make what are usually spicier dishes less spicy, without losing too much flavour.
 
I tend to go for the "standard" curry, not too spicy, not too mild. But sometimes I'll get something different like a chicken tikka, chicken egyptian kebab or chicken patia. Thats kinda like sweet and sour.

Is paneer makhani the dish you like? I'll try some paratha but I've been advised that they want some peshwari and korma as well.

In all seriousness, bhuna is pretty good and I agree with the advice to try a parath instead of a naan.

I dunno there's a portion of truth to this though, whenever I get an Indian in I ask them for the staff curry, its never that hot, loaded with spinach, lentils/chic peas, meat and potatos and tastes like heaven and nothing on the menu tastes quite as good as it does.

For the OP I unfortunately can't suggest much else that hasn't been suggested already, apart from maybe a Nentara, because I like my curries to blister my mouth the next day.
 
Beef Madras is my usual curry of choice, but most places shy away from beef for the obvious reasons. Occasionally I like to have a chicken Vindaloo/Phaal just to cleanse the ol' palate.

What does that mean, a 'staff curry'? Would most curry houses know what that means if you were to ask for one?
 
Yeah probably, even if it's not on the menu they'll know what you mean. A staff curry is something that's normally cooked by the people who work there for the people who work there, it's closer to traditional indian than what you get on the menu and normally tastes amazing.

It will definitely vary from place to place, so if you're thinking of picking one up, ask the guy to ask the chef how hot it is (if they'll sell you one that is).
 
Was doing some consultancy work out in India last year, every lunch time we'd have "staff" curry. Bloody lovely it was, not that spicy either. It's just stuff the guys making the food would actually eat themselves, not Anglicised food. If you have any Indian friends and go round to their house for food that's what you'll get. It will quite likely be vegetarian (with dairy perhaps)
 
I never eat rice with Indian food. Call me weird if you like :p

When I make Indian food at home (more likely) / eat out I tend to get a curry (depending on mood), with a sag aloo and naan, or some other veg dish.

I do appreciate that rice dishes can be nice, but I much prefer other dishes, and find they bloat me much less :)
