Hi all am having to upgread as my pc is no more.
I have about 400pound to spend that is for a motherboard, ram, cpu, Graphics card.
I will be using it for games and the net.
What to get?
Thanks

i have the sapphire model and it is a cracking card, does 220fps in the counterstrike source test at 1360 x 768 with everything on full apart from AA, in game i get a range of 60-150 fps with an average of 120

Not to sure on what board and CPU you could get for the rest though, maybe DFI LanParty NF4 SLI-DR EXPERT (Socket 939) PCI-Express Motherboard (MB-018-DF) which is only £135 all in, leaves you about £95 for a CPU, A64 3500+ is £99, but i suppose you could get the A64 3000+ at £70 odd and just clock it up to save a bit, as it should clock nicely, couple of suggestions there anyway. :)

The A64 3700+ is a great price this week - £50 off!

Having said that though, I'd look at getting an AM2 PC as this is the replacement for Socket 939. Something like the AM2 3800+

Won't going Conroe be cheaper and faster when it's out?

I'm sure that the AM2 3800+ was about £90 or something?

Oh well.

I was thinking of single core chips. The Conroe chips are faster but they're also dual core chips so if he doesn't need a dual core system, an AM2 3800+ (@2.4GHz) will be cheaper and faster than a Conroe 1.86GHz.

If he can wait and if he wants a dual core system, then he should consider Conroe. The 2GHz X2 3800+ is £213, vs £182 for a 2.13GHz Conroe (faster clock for clock, faster clock speed and cheaper). It has been said, however, that the X2 chips will drop drastically in price on release of Conroe. if the X2 3800+ drops to about £100 then it would be a good buy. At it's current price though, it's just too expensive

Ah, I thought you were talking about the X2 3800+, sorry about that. :D Yeah, I have heard the same thing on Dailytech about the X2 3800+ dropping to ~£99 in the next few weeks.

I'm going to see what the battlefield looks like in a couple of months then ditch my fossilised socket 754. ;)

where does he say he doesnt need a dual core system, dual core is the future and it should be reccomended to anyone buying a new pc because it will help their system last longer

He's got like £400 to spend for his whole system, in which case an AM2 3800+ and X1800XT 256MB may just be ideal.
