What to get?

I really need/want to get myself a new car. I've been thinking more towards ;

Astra VXR
Corsa VXR
Focus ST

Something along those lines. I'm leaning more towards the ST - I watched a Youtube video on the ST vs the Astra VXR and they hated the VXR. She mentioned that the ST had a turbo? I didn't think they did?

Any suggestions?

I am in a similar mind to you and i'm looking at getting an ST :). Also, yes, the ST has 2.5L turbo engine (assuming we are talking about 2005 + models)

To be honest, not only do i not like the look of either of the Vauxhalls, it seems that the general consensus is that the Ford is the better car.

I had no idea they were 2.5L turbo's ... Been watching some video's on Youtube, like I said, and i'm wanting one more and more.

There isnt much to be said of the difference between the 215 bhp 2.5L 5 cylinder Turbo in the ST and the 2.0L 240bhp 4 cylinder turbo in the VXR. Both will tune to 300bhp with off the shelf modifications, both have a wealth of aftermarket parts available for them. Both make nice noises with a 3.0inch sports exhaust on them. Test drive both and make your mind up.

If your unhappy with the handling of the Astra and arent averse to a bit of modifying, one of the first mods you can fit to the astra is a Rear Anti Roll Bar from whiteline, costs about £150 if you can find one second hand. See Here

The corsa uses a 1.6 4 cylinder turbo. This makes it a lot easier to drive hard as its less wayward, but its not got the same outright pace as the astra.

I'd be doing a LOT more research into what you're buying - if you don't even know what engine is under the bonnet of the cars you're considering, it's a bit silly to even have a shortlist.

What are you looking for, what's your budget?

I looked briefly at the Astra VXR when I bought my car (Corsa too small, and it's still a Corsa *shudder*), but overall I preffered the ST, so bougth that.

What type of money are we looking at here?

Pretty much sums up what I thought of the OP.

I'd be inclined to know what he actually wants from a car, as tbh if all he wants are the looks of the VXR/ST range then you could get most of that without the running costs of the performance models.

Alternatively you could get a better car completely ;)

Is there even a budget in mind?

None of the above, much rather be looking at Golf GTI, Megane R26 or Clio 197/200, perhaps Mini Cooper S also.

Why does the budget matter? Just go and get the car you want and extend the length of the finance agreement until the monthly repayments suit. Simples.

Go drive them all, then drive the Clio 200.

Then tell us what you want.

Interestingly, I was looking at getting a Clio 200 and test drove it twice, and whilst it was great, it just doesnt feel that fast. I know its incredible around the twisty's and will leave most things standing in that situation but I liked the power delivery of the Focus so much more.

Depends on what you are after though. I've decided that I will probably never go on a track day and that I don't want to be having to rev the nuts of a car to get the best of it.

Looks to me like the OP wants a decent performing and looking warm/hot hatch of some sorts.

Immediately based on you not realising the ST had a turbo (The old ST170 MK1 Focus was a 2.0 N/A, the 'new' Focus ST's are 2.5 turbocharged engines) I would be discounting things like Clio 200 Cups, etc etc.

By the sounds of things you would benefit test drives in something like the list below and then give us some feedback so we can suggest other cars

Focus ST
Astra VXR
Corsa VXR
Golf GTI
Mini Cooper S
Renaultsport Megane

If your not used to quick cars these will certainly be fast enough for you. However, if we knew a better set of requirements (ST/VXR/GTI Looks + Performance, Seats 5, 3 Door, Budget of 10k etc) then there are a lot of people here who can give you some guidance.
