Afternoon all, my mrs had an accident in our run around on Tuesday and it is looking to be a total loss. The car was a corsa sxi 1.4 twinport on a 56 plate, I owned it since new and it was incredibly cheap to run and a great little car.

I am looking to replace it as I will miss having a second car but the question is what should I replace it with? Budget is anything from 4 to about 10k, running costs etc arn't really an issue, I will consider both new and used, I guess that for a new or nearly new the budget could be stretched a little.

As a lot of you probably already know, I have a strange attraction to cars that have engines made of cheese and can't stop looking at RX8's but seen as the mrs has only 6 months driving experience and an accident under her belt this might not be the very best option, it's something that we will both probably drive so insurance might be high but I don't really care that much about that.

The mrs has a new mini cooper D coming so this is pretty much a second car for me and something to use in the interim while we wait for that, it will also come in handy if the Porsche is off the road as it has been for so much of my ownership (luckily she is running like a dream atm).

Bascially criteria are:

1) Must be a car and have 4 wheels
2) Must have at least some redeeming features
3) Needs to be fairly reliable
4) Something both me and the mrs can drive.

So the wise people of OCUK what shall it be? Should I be looking at little fiestas, Corsa''s etc or should I look at something more mondeo size? Or perhaps something like an mx5... I just need some ideas really.

Another thing... Just weighing up the options if I get a 231hp rx8 and insure me and her on it, is that really fair or would i be putting an inexperienced driver at risk If I let her drive it? I am not sure I would be comfortable as at a guess, visibility is bad and you sit low down, also you cant see the extremities of the car so parking may well be an issue, am I just asking for problems?

I was thinking mx5 even before your last para...

To any mx5 owners out there, how is the visibility in the mx5? Almost every soft top car I have ever owned has has always been a compromise almost always with poor visibility when the roof is up.

It's not *bad*, but not great either. Probably not best for a new driver. For this kind of money (and bearing in mind that your other car is a 911..), I'd just buy a Focus for £5k and be done with it.

If she drives like a typical girl, I.e seems unaware that the upper reaches of the rev range exist then the Mazda will be a non issue to drive everyday. What is potentially much more of an issue is potential flooding if its not switched off in the right manner when run cold.

I'd be tempted by a rebuilt one, but it needs to be a car for you that she drives on the odd occasion imo...otherwise get what she wants!

An RX8 as a second car to a Porsche?

Seems a bit mental, personally I'd get something bigger that if I ever need to transport anything or need to go away somewhere I can waft up the motorway in some saloon or estate.

It was a joke considering your history with Porsche repairs :p

Ahh yes I know matey :D I also know that my car buying history is somewhat checkered, I just need to decide what to buy. I have been having a little look and there seems to be loads to choose from even at the low end of the budget.

Too much choice.

If the corsa did everything you needed really well, how about something similar like a 1.6 Fiesta Zetec S / Suzuki Swift Sport? Should be able to pick up decent ones for around the bottom end of your budget.

Edit: Bloody pepsilol

I'm pretty chuffed with our 2011 seat ibiza 1.2 tsi. Good fuel economy, good torque to pull away, good options on most cars. Looks good (5 door one less so).

I shall have a look at swift sports, hadn't even considered these. You see this is exactly why I thought a quick post wouldn't do any harm.

I think one thing that I would miss if I went for something like an RX8 would be the ability to put the rear seats down and turn it into a mini van for skip runs. There really isn't any space to load up the current car for transporting more than say a packet of cigarettes.
