What to get?

Swift Sport seems like a good shout. Owning a Porsche 911 and a RX8 is leading down a path of madness. Been there and done that trying to run two cars that need a tinker and it's a headache!

Swift sport will be a barrel of laughs and will need minimal servicing.

Another thing... Just weighing up the options if I get a 231hp rx8 and insure me and her on it, is that really fair or would i be putting an inexperienced driver at risk If I let her drive it? I am not sure I would be comfortable as at a guess, visibility is bad and you sit low down, also you cant see the extremities of the car so parking may well be an issue, am I just asking for problems?

Insurance isn't horrible.
It's actually a pretty comfortable car. I did a 320 mile trip in one shot and got out feeling perfectly fine. Didn't have to stop for fuel either  :D Fuel light came on at 322 miles. :D
Visibility isn't great over shoulder, but everywhere else is fine.
Fuel economy, well don't expect over 25mpg really.
As for driving it like a girl, forget it. It needs to go to 9000rpm every time it's driven just to stop potential port problems. Although, with an engine that smooth and freerevving it's no problem to take it up there. ;)
Doesn't like short journeys. Anything under 10 miles is asking for problems down the line.
Not great in snow. Huge fun, but not exactly easy.

It's a great car and I absolutely love mine. I'm struggling to find anything to replace it that'll be as much fun to drive that isn't completely ridiculous. For an inexperienced lady driver... Don't think so.

How about a Renaultsport Clio or Megane? Clio 182 or Megane 225? Perfectly sensible everyday, but a bit of fun when needed. Then when the Mini arrives, trackday toy! ;)

budget of £4k to £10k? Wut?

1) Must be a car and have 4 wheels
2) Must have at least some redeeming features
3) Needs to be fairly reliable
4) Something both me and the mrs can drive.

Perhaps I should have so that budget is flexible and anything up to 10k or possibly a bit more would be ok. Obviously I would like to spend less but if 10k bought me something that isn't obtainable for less and would be perfect in every way then I would need to give serious consideration to that option.

I am also having a look at Focus's now, mrs actually seems quite hard to please on this one.

RX8 is meant to be fun, they cost pennies now too but...

Horrendous economy, drink oil, and can throw up Expensive repairs from what seems like a sniffle lol I'd love to have a play with one tho

Only if she hoofs in in the wet and then likes going backwards...

Then there's the engine tips to worry about. You can't just move them off the drive to swap cars - shutting down a cold wankel engine is a really bad move...

Ok many conversations have been had and I think I have found something that the other half likes, I have decided that it actually doesn't matter what I like as I like stupid things and have a toy already, whereas this needs to be a tool.

So gents, I am considering going to see this at the weekend:

http://www.lakeviewcarsalesltd.co.u...-1-2-tce-dynamique-5dr-roydon-201409127349111

It seems relatively sensibly priced and well specced, the engine is meh but I have been thinking and for the mrs right now a slow and sensible car is good. So far I have found out that the mrs isn't so keen on the focus, swift or fiesta (edit: forgot to mention the fabia, ibiza and leon. Doesn't like any of them either) and isn't really getting excited about almost every car mentioned in the thread, she also doesn't like red cars, green cars, yellow cars or bright silver ones.

So what do we think of the clio? Anything to look out for or are these just a massive no?
