What to look for in a MK3 Golf GTi?

But it would be at least a 10 year old car, which slightly worries me.

£1.5-2K is a lot of money for a car that is a decade old, and coming up to 15 years old in design.

That same money spent on a Mondeo for example would see you at least a 99 model, 2000 if you dont mind a few more miles.

Dont get a corrado! decent ones are getting harder to find for decent money. Plus body panels are expensive!

Things to look out for on a Mk3:

Rust on the tailgate, rear arches, door sills, bottom of doors
Electrics - Sunroofs fail far too often and a pain to fix, make sure the windows and mirrors all work
ABS - make sure the light turns on and then off a few seconds later with the ignition, if the light stays on then it could be a sensor or the abs ecu, sensors are £30 - £40, ECUs -
Central Locking is a vacuum pump

erm cant remember what else failed on mine, but i will add more when i remember!

For the motorway i'd say a mk3 would be good. I don't consider £2000 to be a lot to spend on an older car. The point is VW have great build quality and will last longer than a lot of newer cars. I do about 60 miles a day in my mk2 16v. With standard suspension it was really quite relaxing on the motorway and the engine is still very solid and responsive. It depends really on what you are looking for in a car, something that is easy and hassle free, or something with a bit of character.

I've got a G60 Rallye Golf, a Mk3 VR6 and a Mk3 valver. Both the G60 and VR6 are modified and I just use them for toys, really. The 16V is totally standard and is really quite a nice car. It's quick enough, is well built and is very comfortable. For the money I paid, I'd have it over any ford. Oh yeah, the Mk3 16V was 150bhp, but most cars produce closer to 160bhp. :)
