What to look for when buying a scooby

Done a lot of miles though. :)

Most of that stuff is excuseable with that sort of mileage.

Fortunately I won't be looking at getting one thats done those sort of miles.

Dude, forget the idea, its a crap one. I love japanese performance cars, but the impreza idea at your age or even slightly older is gaff

See my post above for idea's on cars which are not a total rip off yet perform better than the turbo2000. The turbo2000 isnt even much good as standard.

Shocked that the MAF fault cost him £300 to fix?

I bought mine 3 years ago off ebay 2nd hand for £40. Still going strong :D

Thought the MAF thing was just pull the lead out and if the engine keeps going the MAF is borked? least thats the deal with 99/00 cars.

Mileage doesn't really kill a scoob drivetrain. If well serviced big miles shouldn't be a problem - probably won't have much of a interior left after 200K but it should still go. :)

Hey all,

As I'll be looking at a subaru impreza as my next proper car (going to be driving a heap whilst i save), would like to know what I should really be looking for when looking at one of these. Yesturday I was bored so I went for a test drive in a Turbo 2000 and absolutely loved it.

So I'd like to know what should I be looking for, what should I look out for.

And before any questions start I've still got the astra. :p

Thanks all :)

After all your recent ups and downs mainly the plumitting to the depths of down...please take a long step back and think about what your about to do or where your heart is taking you over the next few years with relation to your love of motors.

You are going to take a huge hit on the astra, they drop like a stone in value so if your planning to buy another car next year be prepared to write off 8k at least and step into possibly more debt..

Your also looking at buying one of the worst cars you can for running costs vs performance with the turbo 2000. If you want a fast fun car then with performance on par with the subarus your looking at, look no further than the clio 172/182.

For your money etc you will get a newer car and cheaper to run and insure by a long shot.

When I looked at getting a car in 2004 I tried everything I could that was fast and 6 months old and got my 172 even though it was the bottom end of my budget. Its not like your in a position to get a STI PPP or P1 etc which is a different car to a turbo 4wd. The uber cost of running and maintaining is offset by the suberb performance they offer. But this isn't a spec you a car thread so I won't go on about alternatives, specially as some good ones have been posted.

The point is a basic uk subaru turbo isnt that quick as standard and they cost a fair bit to run depending on how they have been looked after etc, tuned ones cost a fortune to run (+ fuel etc) as bits wear out specially depending on how they have been modded, who by and how they have been driven. But the clincher is insurance on a standard turbo (in the age/range of car your looking at) will be immense compared to others like say the 172. Insurance on a moded subaru or one of the faster varieties inc imports will be almost impossible/uber waste of money (e.g. 2-3k you could put into a different car) at your age.

Its your call though and if you want a subaru and your happy to live with the costs then thats cool.

Thanks for your advice, but i'll say this one more time.

The astra is being sorted.

Im not going to be buying until Next year, depending on how things pan out, probably when im 19.

I'm not "about" to do anything, i started a thread asking what to look out for, as i have a general interest in them. A couple of people have answered, and provided good information. Is it so hard for everyone else that they have to sit there and either moan/slate, or advise not to go and buy one as i'll be in loads of debt because i have the astra, when i've said how ever many times im going to actually be looking to buy one next year?

Sorry if I sound harsh but if people are just gonna sit there and tell me not to buy it because i have an astra at the moment then why bother replying? I'm not looking to buy yet.

Why?

There isn't any harm what so ever in asking miles in advance.

You asked us what to look for and we have told you..astronomical running costs and mediocre performance :) The difference between 18/19 on the insurance on these is not great.

I spent a long time looking at subarus from the turbo to the sti PPP (mostly the newer ones though) and also spent a fair bit of time on the forums and after several hours of test driving and a lot of reading later I summised that insurance and running costs just wern't worth it on the normal turbo to justify the performance. Insurance and running costs on the sti PPP were silly but worth it for the performance if you compare it to cars which kick out similar performance and the costs of running those.

The above doesn't detract from the fact they are good cars though :)

I know you say you have your astra being sorted out which is good.

Best thing you can do, which at your age may be more difficult depending on how the dealers view you and what cars your looking at, is go do the rounds and try out as many cars as you can from different manufacturers. It will give you a chance to see what in your opinion really shines.

Appart from mechanical issues, running costs, prices etc which people can help you out with on here nothing beats testing the cars yourself.

You could play the getting it for my 18th card which may make the dealers (both franchise and small traders) more aminable to you.

If all else fails a BMW 328/330i or 530i sport tbh.

Also why do you feel the need to buy an older car which is cheaper. There are loads of ways out of your finance/car if you found another car through a dealer eg astra gsi deealer supplied imprezza. With luck you may find you land a decent job and can afford more of a car. :D

Last time I looked a lot of the subaru dealers are doing few year old imprezza turbos with 40-60k on the clock for circa 8k atm where the prices have dropped and with that you will get a full warranty + finance (if you need it).

I'm 29 and I'm still working my way towards something like an impreza..

Mind you my ST has about the same sort of power as one of the earlier models but still.. If I'd had an impreza in my early 20s I'd probably be dead now and I'm glad I've had the experience of 205 1.9gti, celica, mondeo st24, 320ci etc to build up through.

I have a feeling I'll skip impreza and I'm already starting to eye up evo's after an fq340 left me for dead last week but my message to the op is.. if you insurance is over a grand and the bhp is under 300 then you're probably not ready for what you're asking to insure.
