what to look for when looking at peugeot 206

My nan has a 1.4 auto 206, I've been in it once and it was fairly awful. Engine is noisy being the most annoying, seems to rev up high most of the time. I guess that's because it has no power and the box is sucking most of it, she seems to like it anyway.
One day though it wouldn't start, spontaneous ECU failure, cost a grand to fix. Ouch.

I see a lot of head gaskets go and cooling issues with these cars. Check it comes up to temperature normally and remains at a constant temp. Check it has power (yes I know) and check coolant reservoir for mayo/white substance residue. Check for any leaking oil around the head/block. Also check ALL electrics work at the same time without it breaking down. French cars are known for electrical niggles. Take it on as long a test drive as possible and turn everything on and off a few times.

For £1.5k, you'd be better off getting a 205 instead of a 206. Auto's are rare however, so tell her get to get a GTI and offer to change gears for her! :p

205?? It’s about 100 years old with no modern features, the poor girl will have a heart attack when she gets inside one :o

My friend has a 206 HDi can’t tell him enough how camp he looks driving one :D

Sorry, please do sit down and explain to me how a 205 with 21,000 miles on the clock and full service history is 'totally gash'? It is absoultely flipping ideal, it is a simple, a well maintained small car with all the mod cons that you need in a city car. No, the person that the OP describes won't buy it, probably because she is a moron who thinks that it is 'old' and 'ugly', where as a 206 is 'modern' and 'cute'.

With you using words like 'Gash' I suppose you would recommend a flip painted Corsa with a bodykit?

Mod cons? Back in the 80's yeah :/ Where the heck have you pulled 'flip painted Corsa with a bodykit' from? You may be surprised at what I drive. There isn’t a time of day I would recommend a shed of a corsa.

/Ohhh I see your a 205 driver? Here to defend your motor? I’m not being disrespectful so if I come across that way sorry.

It has Power steering and I'm assuming electric windows, I can't think of much more you'd want from a city car? A/C that I can almost certainly guarantee won't work properly (not on a £1,500 206 anyway)? As a comfortable, small automatic hatchback for £1,500 you're going to struggle to beat it in terms of something that'll actually work. The previously mentioned K11 Micra would be a great choice, but they are hardly brimming with kit either !

Come to think of it, we do have a winner in the form of a 205 Gentry. Detuned 1.9 GTi engine, leather seats, electric windows, A/C AND an automatic gearbox :D.

I'm not defending my car really, I'm just an advocate of old bangers, just in this case I happen to own the old banger being slated! Sorry if it seemed like I snapped at you :) .

It is absoultely flipping idea

It's a 20 year old small Peugeot hatchback for 1700 quid! It's so far from ideal its actually amusing. It's not even a GTi, it's just a run of the mill everyday model.

How can you even begin to think its a credible suggestion?

I agree a 205GTi is a cracking car no doubting that! :) But an Auto base spec is well not that great in the grand scheme of things, and a Nissan Micra? :D That’s probably got less kit too! And your right about the air-conditioning in French cars they just don’t work :/

The GTi-6 in your sig you don’t have that in your 205 do you? :D

Because it is a well maintained, comfortable automatic hatchback.

It is 20 years old. It is now the preserve only of Peugeot enthusiasts - no regular joe is going to want to spend £1700 on a car which, to the untrained eye, should have a 'Police Aware' sticker on the window and a value of £40.

To Mr Average that is a bona fide old banger. The fact it has 21k miles on it pales into insignificance alongside the small fact its TWO DECADES OLD.

If the OP was buying a car himself, loved old school hatches and it was a GTi I'd be saying 'Wow, nice find!'.

But he isnt - its for a girl. And she'll not want to drive around in a car like that. She's picked a 206 not because 'It i a Peugeot' but because 'It is modern and cute'.

The 205 is neither.

Do you want a Gold star for repeating what I said in exactly the same post you quoted from, albeit stretched out a tad?

forgive him he is blinded by the ownership of a 205,

I don't know of a girl with £2k in her back pocket who would go near one. Hell I don't know many who would look for anything less than a X-reg or newer clio lol.

As said to the op.. Just RUN!

Sorry you have lost me. Given we hold utterly opposing views on that car I cannot see how I am repeating you.

Ignore him, the guy is weird. Had this more than a few times with him already. Suggesting a 205 which will be older than the purchaser(!) in this scenario is just totally bizarre, given that the whole point of the 206 is that it looks fluffy to young women drivers.

The list of options, in order of preference for this situation

1) Talk her into getting a Micra
2) Settle on a Clio if she insists on french and cute
3) Make an excuse why you cant help her and dont get involved

Really? We even use similar words to describe the cars?

No, the person that the OP describes won't buy it, probably because she is a moron who thinks that it is 'old' and 'ugly', where as a 206 is 'modern' and 'cute'.

In this context I am fully aware that the 205 won't be purchased because people are far too concerned with registration plates (or in this case, a car being 'cute') to care if it'll actually work. The above 205 is a simple, well maintained automatic Hatchback. 100% of the £1,500 206s out there aren't.

Lets get this clear, I am not suggesting the 205 as a serious prospect to the OP. I am merely pointing out that on face value you will struggle to find anything that will beat it for the money without straying from the brief massively.
