My GTX 580 has just died. So now I need to decide on the best card to replace it with. I have always brought NVIDIA cards however would not be averse to a Radeon if they were considered better value in terms of price to performance. Which current cards on the market would you suggest I go for that would match or surpass a GTX 580

Right now, the best bang for buck to be had is with the AMD 7950. Performance almost as good as nVidia GTX680 and £240 vs £390

Is your 580 still under warranty?

What is your max budget?

Psu up to scratch?

That aside, as mentioned the 7950 is the best value for money, and will be faster than your 580 by a reasonable margin (especially when overclocked).

To be honest I cant find my warranty for the GTX 580 so that is neither here nor there im afraid. My budget is flexible. I just want to be able to match or surpass the gaming performance the 580 gave me. Saying that Im not sure I want to pay 400 odd quid for a 680:)

I would go for a 7950 as the price is very good.
I have 3 cards,680,690 and a 7950 and i must say iam well impressed with the 7950

Due to the overclocking potential the AMD 7000 series offer, ideally I'd want one that isn't voltage locked. Unfortunately, I'm not too sure about which ones are / aren't. If I remember rightly, the Gigabyte 7950 was at one point unlocked, but I don't know for sure about newer batches.

Ok the 7950 looks very promising, however my head is now being turned by the GTX 670. So if you had a straight choice between the 2 which one would you go for?

I think there's very little between them in performance, so as said, unless you want nVidia specific features then the 7950 is the better choice.

Also, if you're looking at spending more then you can get a 7970 for the same money as a GTX670.

I'm sort of in the same boat but i'm trying to hold off upgrading till the next wave of AMD/Nvidia cards are out because my 580 seems to be able to play whatever I throw at it still. Think I might have the upgrade itch. :(

I was in similar position (till my 480 keeled over) -but problem is the next gens of cards are way way off yet ! like at least 8 months aren't they ?

so a 40% boost (or so) now- would be quite nice :)
