What to see in northern Scotland and its west coast?

Personally (having done both), I`d avoid the east coast and go up the west and back down on slightly different route. Scenery on west coast is superb. Some random memories/highlights from two trips.....

Achmelvich Beach near Lochinver. Simply stunning, on a summer day THE best beach ever LINK

Gruinard Island, you will drive past this and see it from the coast, dont breathe too deeply as you go past mind LINK

Cape Wrath. Take the small boat/mini bus trip thing, on a clear day you can see right across the north coast LINK

Balnakiel Beach near Durness. Was here on a warm day, clear blue water and pretty much empty.

Loch Eribol (on north coast). HUGE sea loch (so big u get fed up driving around it) with loads of WW2 connections, LINK.

some epic biking roads

just follow the coast and you cant go wrong a82 up loch lomond, a83 from tarbet round loch fyne to lochgilphead

a816 up to oban, detour to crinan ferry if you want, oban great place to stay for beers, whisky, seafood..campsite just outside town overlooking isle of kerrera if you are camping..otherwise plenty of B&B's and a very grand youth hostel with amazing view over the bay

follow the coastal route if you want or head back inland depending on which way you want to see glencoe..its amazing either way and a must if you are on bike, again detour down to glen etive from the a82 if you want to see some amazing sights..its a single track road, little used and doesnt even have a number..but well worth it

head on up to skye...from there you are limited by the road network..or lack of it a832/835/836/890 are about the only roads..and they just keep on going! but they are A roads in name only, vast swathes of them are single lane with passing places..only a bike can really make rapid progress.

just miles and miles of bugger all, bogs and midgies
