Hi Guys,

Thinking of upgrading my second gaming rig that I have at my folks place.

Which consist of an i5 3570k and a Nvidia Geforce 960 ruuning at 1920x1080 with GSync and 144Mhz

The i5 3570k is running at default speeds as the motherboard wont allow me to overclock it past x38 multiplier. I did think of just getting a second hand socket 1155 Z77 motherboard just so that I can still use the i5 3570k and overclock it up to/past 4 Ghz but the Z77's still go for a fair whack on the bay.

So have been thinking of just replacing the CPU, motherboard and memory.

Have a budget of around £300 - £400+- a few pounds.

What do people recommend I should go for? Open to looking at AMD as CPU jsut not sure to go for 6 core or 8 core.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Hello, either the i5 8600k or r5 2600x would be pretty good option CPU wise, but the killer here will be the cost of RAM. Assuming you want to got for 16gb, the ram alone would blow half your budget :( I really hope prices normalize soon, but for right now unless you have a very specific need for more CPU power, like streaming or editing, I would stick with what you have and put your money towards a better GPU.

Ok thanks for the advice,

Tbh I didn't know memory had gone up that much, price is ridiculous at the minute.

I think I'm actually better off looking for a second hand Z77 board.

This is what I did. I ended up at one point having maybe 20 boards in my eBay watch list, eventually snagged an Asus P8Z77-M Pro for a pretty reasonable price (£58). Lord alone knows how many I missed out on along the way though, people bid silly money for them.
