is it best to stick to the DPP software that came with the cannon for importing raw or is photoshop elements a better idea. and what about x100 pics, the software isn't compatible with Mac osx 10.7.4,is elements ok for that swell?
thanks

I use aperture too and I think it is superb (bar a few bugs). However personally I would hold off purchasing aperture until after WWDC as a new version is long overdue and if they are going to announce it any time soon it will be there I think.

Can do VASTLY more with it for a start. Can properly edit photos to the same standard as lightroom and can download presets also from quite a few websites. Theres also loads of programs which have plugins if you intend to branch out into things such as HDR or want better sharpening etc. Theres hundreds of options to change in aperture compared to only a few in iPhoto.

Due to being an apple program, you can also import directly from iPhoto with no issues at all and it links to flickr and Facebook really nicely to simplify uploading, just like with iPhoto.

thanks, sounds ideal.can you send photos to an external drive?

oh and when i photo imports off my 550d versus the cannon software DPP the DPP seems slightly sharper if thats the right word.do you import directly to aperture or to DPP 1st? thanks again

I import straight into aperture. Theres some settings for RAW like hue boost and sharpening which you can change as you see fit. The DPP software applies the picture profiles from your camera (like standard, portrait, neutral, faithful etc) whilst aperture doesn't do this, but you can do more in aperture anyway.

You can export straight to an external drive and also work from one of them if you want to. The export tool is really good as it'll convert a RAW file to pretty much whatever you want with really high quality.

DPP applies sharpening after you import based on the photography style you picked on the camera. This can easily be beaten with apertures edge sharpen or overall sharpen settings, which can be combined if needed. Photos don't usually need sharpening though imo!

wow thanks for that comprehensive answer james. that covers it very well. am i correct in thinking that with Aperture i can use just that for both the cannon and the fuji without having 2 separate softwares installed. by the way does aperture do the slideshows with music like iPhoto and how does Aperture work in conjunction with my iPad, at the moment I phot syncs with the iPad?
very grateful for your input.

Does both, can sync with iPads and other macs + has the album and picture viewing like music/films in itunes where you scroll through them horizontally.
